Anybody running a carb spacer
I am getting a harwood cowl hood here in a couple of weeks, and I am going with the open element air cleaner. My dual snorkle air cleaner always sat right against the hood, so the spacer was not an option to try. But, since I will have the extra room now, I was thinking about trying it. Anyone running one, what are the advantages and disadvantages. What is it's primary function?? Thanks in advance Jason

An open spacer increases the plenum volume and makes the engine "think" it has a bigger carb. If it actually needs more carb, it will improve power w/o the expense of a different carb.
A 4-hole will increase low-end torque. If you suffer from a lock of low-end torque, it might help a little.
One disadvantage would be that they rob Peter to pay Paul (what you gain on one end will be lost on the other, although perhaps not one-for-one). Another disadvantage would be that you would be forced to use a less desireable air cleaner, such as having to give up a dual-snorkel with its cool air inlet feature and go with an open element air cleaner which would injest warmer, less dense air and counteract any benefit the spacer may have given you.

I wouldnt have to give up the daul snorkle, I just wanted to get a chrome open element and I figured since I was getting the cowl hood it would breathe fine. Will the cowl hood help me any for the open element, or would the daul snorkle still be better.

if ingesting warmer underhood air bothers you that much, you could always seal the aircleaner to the cowl hood... then you get your nice cool air still, and you have more space underhood.

Yup, sealing to the cowl would be the hot ticket in that case. Better than a dual snorkel, actually.

anyone have thoes pics of a NASCAR style cowl air intake on a 3rdgen?
the one where it covers the entire air filter and sucks in air from a hole that is cut in the upper part of the firewall......

Would be kinda of tough, since the cup cars have fairly tall fenders, and the motor sunk down in there.
Even a 3rd gen with a stock setup, it would be tough to clear the distributor.
However the concept could be easily used, and I probably will get to it once I'm done with the 22 gallone fuel cell
(I'm actually serious about that
)
But with a Victor Jr., 4150, 4" K&N w/1.75 drop base is still going to need a cowl of around +2". That's of course without lowering the engine any, and believe me I would love to, but that damn K member is in the way!

Opps I'm also running a 1" - 4 hole spacer, because this altitude has away of making a 750CFM act like a 1100CFM when you only have an idle vac of 6".
