Carb rebuild?

Is there anything I need to know before I take my car in for a carb rebuild? Stock CC Quadrajet, 5.0 H.O., all emmisions intact and I believe functioning. I have not checked timing, but replaced cap, rotor and coil when I got the car a few months ago. I checked the computer and did not get any codes. Car does not idle good when cold, and idles high when warmed up. I can't replace fuel filter (in carb) because the nut on the supply line is mangled. I was gonna use vise grips to take it off when I noticed what could be damaged threads on the inlet. When I got the car, it would not idle at all- I sprayed carb down with cleaner and it idles better- but may idle at 1200 rpm when I'm stopped (5 speed fyi)
Should I check timing before I bring it in to the carb shop or would a good shop be able to do that too?

What is a good price for a cc quadrajet? I got a quote for $350 off the car and $410 on the car. Is that too high, just right or a good deal.

Seems high to me, is it a dealership or something? I usually charge 200 on the car, 125 off the car (plus some if any modifications are wanted). Really only so much more on the car cause I check and replace most of the hoses while i'm at it. check the timing, you could, or any competent shop should be able to do it. Lots of ignition problems are misdiagnosed as carb problems. But it sounds like a vacuum leak to me. BTW for that kind've money you should just about be able to buy a carb.

I had a carb shop rebuild my non-cc Quadrajet for my '67 Cutlass. He charged $250, off the car. I'm expecting this other one will run closer to $300 because its on the car and I'll want him to fix the fuel inlet.
I know I can get a new after market carb for about the same or a little more but I'd like to keep all emissions stuff stock- testing in Connecticut is supposed to start up again "real soon". I drove a failed Chevy truck for about a year and then they suspended the registration-big *** ache. Thanks for all replies!

rhuarc,

Are you still in IL? How close to St. Louis? If close enough I may be interested in a rebuild, if you are!

The carb I have on now works much better but I still have a rich problem. I got it off of Ebay, it was rebuilt, I guess, because the cover over the IAB is gone.

Can't figure out the rich problem though. I adjusted the idle mixture screws out about 7 turns and the IAB out about 3 turns. I smell the unburned gas!
