I'm trying to see if it's possible to adapt my stock q-jet spreadbore to a performer RPM square bore intake and not have hood clearance issues. So far, it's not looking promising if nearly everybody who has written in thus far has been right.

well i had my q-jet on my perfomer intake and its a spread bore but i think there is adaptors at Pepboys where i work were u can use a spreadbore carb or intake and adapt it to the square bore intake or carb. its like 20 bucks for the adaptor and its like 1in thick

Maybe this will help...
Don't know if you knew about this but Edelbrock makes a Performer RPM intake manifold that allows a spreadbore carb to be bolted on without the need of an adapter. P/N 7104 So anyone who stocks Edelbrock intakes ought to be able to hook you up with one. I imagine that it would then clear the stock hood since those adapters are like an inch thick.

When I worked in a speed shop the Trans Dapt squarebore to spreadbore adapter was about 3/4" thick.
The Mr Gasket etc are essentially the same. Like Bunker82 mentioned in his post there is a spread bore Perf RPM available, it would be more expensive but is preferrable over adapting the manifold to work with the carb.

Okay. I know that. I have the intake already though. I don't wanna sell it and start over. I wanna make it work. If that means I gotta buy a square bore carb, then I gotta buy a carb. I'm just trying to determine if that's the case. It certainly won't be the end of the world. I'm weighing my options and trying to save money if I can becaue that means I can spend it on gears or whatnot. I'd love to hear from someone who's done this same swap and what their findings were. While the RPM on my LG4 might be kinda like swatting a housefly with a snowshovel, I haven't ruled out swapping in a 350 at some point down the road. And this will do nicely come that date and time. See? I'm not just Camaro Barbie. There's some method to my madness.

Seriously guys, I love the feedback, but I'm trying not to get too caught up in the negativity and focus on the car's potential over the long haul.

Didn't know you already had the intake. Oops Try doing a search on the boards about carb spacers. I did not long ago and I am pretty sure I remember reading some posts about people with Performer RPMs talking about hood clearance issues. Sorry I don't have any info on that setup specifically. I know that with the regular Perfomer intake, an Edelbrock carb and a drop base air cleaner I am juuuuust barely fitting under my hood.
There is nothing wrong with your approach with the intake if you plan on a 350 down the road. I put my Edelbrock 750 carb on my LG4. That was overkill. But I knew more cubes were on the way (gotta love 383's ).

with a drop base air cleaner and a 600 holley with an RPM intake it fit on my friend's car with an iroc hood like your's tracy.....although i must say that he did have slightly worn out motor mounts. But in retrospect if you remove the hood heat padding???(is that what it's called) and i believe if you cut a little from the hood supports(if need be my friend didn't have to) you should have no trouble. Also a nice low drop base air cleaner is key....very important.
Also, my camaro has a iroc hood with a performer (not RPM) intake, a 750 holley and a K&N drop base cleaner and I still have a little over an inch of clearance...so it would fit in my car....although for some reason my hood is slightly higher in the back than the fenders...

Cool! more encouraging news! Thanks for the feedback. The soundproofing was never put under this hood. I gotthe hood brand new last year expecting it would "come with" but it doesn't and I never bothered to order it. What's a little engine noise?

well i dont know how much difference there is in hight from the perfomer and the perfomer rpm manifold but i guess i dont have problems with hood clearence with my hood and i even have a 14x4 K&N and its not a drop base and i still have about 2-3 inches of room in my hood.

Copperchick - like I stated in your other thread, I seriously doubt you'll clear your hood with a spacer. I don't think you'll be able to close the hood even without an aircleaner! And if you go with an aftermarket carb, you'll need to replace the distributor too. It would be cheaper to sell your squarebore RPM and buy a spreadbore RPM. I got mine off EBay for only $95 shipped.

shes from canada and our cars didnt get CCC Q-jets till 87. so as a result she has a regular, vacuum advance, non-computer controlled HEI distributor.
