A question for other people who have a carburated camaro
I have an 87 camaro with a 305 and a 4 brl carb, and yesterday I had some electrical problem, and we fixed it. The interesting part was that we had somehow wired something else, and I found out that for some reason there is an electric fuel pump in my gas tank. It wasn't being used and we disconnected it, but I am wondering if anyone else with a carburated camaro has this. If it is set up like mine, you probably won't know unless you look behind the back seat. There should be an overlap of carpeting, and if you lift up the middle part about where the drive shaft is, there would be 2 wires. If you have them, then you probably have one too.

i believe only the 87 carburated camaroes used the combination of the in-tank electric pump and the fuel pump on the block (like a regular carburated small block chevys).

I don't think it is supposed to be in there because it wasn't even hooked up. It looked like my car was being built to be fuel injected, but was changed to be carburated at the factory. Also, carburated small block chevy engines only use one fuel pump which is on the block.

'87 LG4's had an in-tank "pusher" electric pump, and an engine-mounted mechanical pump with a return line. The intent was to reduce vapor lock problems. Before that, they just had the mechanical pump on the engine (but with return line).
If a customer complained about vapor lock in years before that, the dealer could install an "anti-vapor lock kit" that included the in-tank electric pump, and a fender-mounted blower that blows air on the carb when the engine is hot and not running. My donor car had that blower, but not the in-tank electric pump (not sure why).
Yes, the electric pump should be there, and should be used with the carb'd engine (wasn't a "mistake" at the factory). Not having it function properly has the potential to cause you problems.

I have a 1991 RS Camaro, and my fuel pump is located in the the gas tank as well. Oddly enough, it just died (after 104K miles) so I just had it replaced. Kind of weird that GM put the pump inside the actual gas tank. They had to drop my tank and exhaust just to access it. I hope GM thinks a little harder about where to put important sh*t like that, because it cost an arm and leg in labor alone just go get it replaced.

I have an 86 LG4 and it has the intank pump (I think), I know I saw the wires behind the back seat when I redid the carpet. I don't think my intank pump is working though, I have never heard it run since I have owned the car. I do have the mechanical pump on the engine though. Is it important that the electric pump work or can the mechanical pull gas through it and still work ok??
