87 Firebird fuel system
Help! I bought an 87' formula body that originally had an LG4 4BBL 305. I installed a 350 with carburetor and am wondering why this car has an electric fuel pump in the tank. Didn't they use a mechanical pump with all carbureted engines? Do I need the mechanical pump or can I run the line directly to the carb? Does anyone know how the original setup should be?

Car: 87 Formula
Engine: 327
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 3.23
The electric pump is there to stop vapor lock problems. The car originally used a mechanical pump with return line as well. Excess fuel just went through the mechanical pump and returned to the tank. The mechanical pump only pumped what was needed up to the carb at the right pressure. The electric pump runs off of an oil pressure sender. When theres pressure the in tank pump runs. I've put a 327 in my 87 formula and i am still using both original pumps.
