car dies below 1800 rpm

I must've screwed up some adjustment when I had the carb apart, because now it won't idle . When I start it up, I have to hold the gas in so it stays at about 2000rpm or more to keep it alive. It is running lean at low rpms according to the meter on the o2 sensor. Does this indicate any certain adjustment to anyone? I have a quadrajet.
Thanks
John

Are you positive there is no vacuum leaks..brake booster vacuum line or anything like that?I would check that out first if you had the carb apart and are positive it is correct.

forsure sounds like a serious vacuum leak, also see if the idle screw is out enought to hold it in idle and if the screws are out and not all the way in.

I'm pretty sure there are no vacumm leaks, all hoses are hooked up and I'm 95% sure they're in the correct routing (I'll double check tomorrow). Brake booster, egr, and everything else is hooked up. How do the lean and rich mixture screws work? Do they set the limits of how rich and lean the carb can get and then the computer keeps it within this range?

OK, I just measured the float level to be 13/16" from the top of the casting, which I believe is too low according to chilton's. I set it to 3/8" (because the book had either 11/32" or 7/16" and it said to get it within 1/16" of one of these. Could this have been my problem? Maybe I accidentally pushed down on it or something. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

OK guys,
If anyone is reading these posts, it is now running rich (just my luck) so I guess I set it too high. I don't have time to take it apart again tonight and adjust the float but I guess I narrowed it down to just the float. finally I have something to work with. So where should I set it? 13/16" is too low and 3/8" is too high.
Thanks
John

John, that kind of float adjustment shouldn't make that big a change. I think it's far more likely that you got a gasket on backwards, messed up the IAB adjustement or something like that. I run all my QJets with the foat set at between 1/4" and 3/8" down from the top of the fuel bowl. In this position the float looks nearly parallell with the top edge of the fuel bowl.

Thanks Damon for responding. When I first started it back up I left the secondary rods off completely by accident, which would most definitely cause flooding wouldn't it? Well I realized this after about 20 sec, shut off the car and put them back on. It is still running rich. Is it possible that this is the problem now? I guess I'm one of those people that has no common sense when it comes to carbs, lol. As far as the IAB I didn't touch it and the gaskets are on correctly but the air horn one is taking some abuse because of the large number of times I've had the air horn off. It runs now at idle by itself, but I shut it off after a few seconds because I don't want to foul the plugs. No matter what the rpms, its really rich.
