Carb dyno shootout results..

I was bored tonight and was looking around the web. On a stang site..I found a dyno shootout of 7 different carbs on a built 302 from soem Ford mag. They ran each one a few times to get them all tuned to suit the motor. I thought the results were very interesting.

Carb: HP/TQ
Stock stang Holley 344.2/323.7
Holley 650 DP 360.2/346.8
Demon 650 DP 362.7/338.4
Holley 600 VS 351.4/327.6
Holley 750 VS 359.9/336.2
JET Stage II Q-Jet 348.9/343.0
Edelbrock 650 350.8/329.3
Edelbrock 750 350.2/326.9

Holleys ROCK! Thanks Jester, while technically it isn't for our cars, it is nice to see some evidence... Next they need to slap on a TPI and a miniram! LOL

1984 z28 w/ a 357 cu in. monster engine which is looking like the posterchild for Edelbrock with the exception of the Holley 750vac... all the suspension stuff... 9-bolt posi disk is in...

Well from a carbs perspective..a 350hp motor is a 350hp hp motor..regardless of the fender badging.

Well..not really true...if that motor was a 350 or something else with a longer stroke the differences would be greater.

I saw a TPI vs carb test once...but it was just a 600VS carb on a stock 305. HP was almost equal..I think the TPI gained something in the teens for torque. Never seen a miniram test.

Good topic. One would expect more to appreciate it. Can you post a link to the article?

True, yet most people like me are too shocked by the actual dyno numbers between the carbs to say anything besides
SSC

Edit: It would be real interesting to see what kind of numbers these put out, right out of the box "no tuning other than floats/a/f"

Edelbrock calls it a 650, Carter calls it a 625 or some such thing.

Lemmie guess..thier 750cfm is the same casting too

Knowing Edelcrock..it wouldn't surprise me.

Of course the castings are the same, just the venturi inserts are different.

I still think it's funny that the Edelbrocks basically got beat by a Qjet. 2 more HP and 15-20 less ft-lbs. Not a good trade IMO.

The Holley definitely seems to be the best performer, but I can't tune a Holley to save my life and I can sort of tune a Qjet.

I made some comments relating to the this in another thread...and thought I would cut ans paste them in here too. The debate was over the differences between this test and most of us..as it's a 302 and not a 350.

.........However, there will be differences in thier impact on a dyno test. The 302 has not only a smaller displacment, but a much shorter stroke. As such, it is much less sensitive to carb restrictions. If those carbs were dynoed on a similarly modded 350, the differences between them would be significantly larger, but in the same order.
