A question about the manual choke on my double pumper.

How should I hook this thing up. Should I just run a cable to the cab and pull the choke half way open on these 50-60 degree days? Any advise on how I should set the fast Idle speed? My car almost never starts on the first try (when it's cold) unless I give it a lot of gas. Then I have to tap the gas every other second for about a minute just to keep it running. BTW, I read all of the other choke post and I have a pretty good understanding of them. Just want to get my car starting better.

Once the engine is warmed up, you should have the choke off completely-regardless of outside temp. Use the choke to help it stay running when the engine is cold. Open the choke gradually as it warms up--like an electric choke does by itself.

350 with stealth intake, holley carb, 470 lift cam. 700r4 with .5 boost valve, vette servo, tci lock-up kit, B&M megashifter. Richmond 3.73 gears, powertrax locker, timkin bearings, synthetic lube. Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, currant red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...

Better operating, cleaner-looking, and less hassle is an electric choke conversion. Seriously consider it as an alternative to punching another hole in your firewall and mounting another control inside the already cramped driver's compartment.

I know that the choke is not supposed to be on at all when the engine starts to get warm. And I'm not putting an electric choke on this carb. I'm just looking for a lttle advise to help me now how to set things up with my manual choke.

Run the cable, pick a place to mount the **** where it won't interfere with anything else, including your knee. The carb should have a clamp for the cable housing and on the choke lever for the inner wire. Make the initial adjustment so the choke is fully open when the **** is fully pushed in (having the **** out about 1/8" when you set the cable for the choke fully open is a good way to insure the choke is not even slightly closed when the **** is pushed all the way in).

To start it, depress the pedal about 1/4 or more (how far you really need to depress it will be an individual thing with your car - farther will put more raw gas from the accelerator pump into the intake manifold), and pull the choke **** out fully while the pedal is down - this will allow the fast idle cam to clear the fast idle screw and close the choke completely for the initial start-up. Let the pedal up, crank it over, push the choke **** in slightly after it fires. Tap the throttle again to take the fast idle off of the highest step. With some trial and error, you'll find where it likes to run, including where to set the fast idle speed. Keep easing the choke off while the engine warms up.

For warmer engine starts but not fully cooled off, about 1/2 choke will get it going. Still need to depress the pedal slightly before pulling the ****.

After about of year of this, you'll be ready to look into an electric choke, especially if this is a daily driver.
