need carberatur suggestion.....

My friend just got a 1979 pontiac firebird formula with 301 and 2 barrel carn which is stock. He wants to get a 4 barrel and he will need a new intake manifold. Which carberatur do you guys recommend and how many cfm would be good. Also which intake manifold would be a good choice. Thanks alot.

625 Road Demon.Dont know much about the 301 but i would recommend a Performer intake from Edelbrock if they make one for the 301.I wouldnt recommend going much bigger than 650 cfm on a 301 as these are not a high horse motor.

Im going against my personal standards here but. It is true that these 301's are thought of as below lg4 305's as 350's are above 305's, thats alot. So heres where my standards come into the picture I would suggest that your friend get a 1406 edelbrock. Thier cheap, easy to work on and there would be no problems running this carb in stock form on the 301. Holleys/Deamons are picky and need to be tunned for smaller engines.
AS far as intakes go stay away from the "stock replacement" ones because they really dont flow that much better than stock, I cant justify the 110$ for these manifolds any more when they do little over stock. I would suggest going for a "Performer RPM" or "Wieand Stealth" Do it right the 1st time.
Good luck!

I use to have a 79 GRand Prix that had a 301. I agree with the small carb idea. It took me about 1/4 mile to hit 5k rpm in 1st gear. They don't like to rev very high. And when you make them, they blow up, like mine did.
I would even go as far as suggest dropping in a 305 at least. They are much cheaper, and run better too. Even one of the junk yard variety. Hey, I would even give him mine if he wants the TPI that is on top of it.

I am able to say that Edelbrock seems to be a good company, and aside from the 1% that hate them from experience... I can't say anything bad... the idle screws are in a much more reasonable place than holleys (just my own experience). 600 CFM ought to be plenty, keep in mind that by dropping to 550 or 500 you will save some gas, and you will probably still gain a little Hp over that little 2 barrel.

A 600 cfm Holley vac.seconaries for$ 201.95 sounds about right for this setup.
