Question about a vacume advance on a carter carb

ok its a mopar 318 but it is a carb so i guess its the same.on my 318 on cam is 204/214 @ 0.50 i have a 625 carter AFB carb. on the drivers side of the carb there is a full time vacume i believe? and in the center there is a large full time vacume. and on the pass side there is a ported vacume?

now where do i connect the distributer's advance, i currently have it on the drivers side vacume. it reads 10 deg before. if i connect it to the other vacume it reads 10 deg after, if i have it on the after it goes up as soon as i open the throttle. for reguler street driving where should it be?

also i have the vacume canister, where does that hook up to, the full time?

thanks

That all depends.
How does the car run hooked uo to full vac?
If it runs fine leave it there. If it kinda runs crappy then put it on the ported vac passenger side, the middle is used for pcv valve. Ipersonaly find it better to use the ported vac. You have a vac canister for such a small cam? A vacume canister is needed when you go for a real gutsy cam and you canot operate the power brakes. With 204 215@.50 cam there should be no need to use the canister unless your talking smog equiptment "charcoal canister."

For such a small cam I would connect the vac. adv. to a ported source (passenger side of the carb.
And this...
i currently have it on the drivers side vacume. it reads 10 deg before. if i connect it to the other vacume it reads 10 deg after

So the vac. adv is giving 20* of additional timing.
I am unsure of the correct timing curve for a mopar 318, but I would get an adjustable vac. adv. and reset the intial timing then re-curve the mechanical and only have about 8-10* vac. adv. on the ported source to increase fuel economy on part throttle cruising.

Connect it to the port that only gives vacuum above idle speeds (ported vacuum).

Your initial timing should ALWAYS be set with the line disconnected, regardless of which port you hook it to.

With the line disconnected if you are reading 10 AFTER TDC then your timing is VERY retarded. You should try about 8* BEFORE TDC as a starting point. If it's like I think it is, you will gain a LOT of performance by doing this.

I also agree with the obove post about limiting the vacuum advance amount down to about 10*. 20* is WAY WAY too much once you have the initial timing set where it needs to be to get best performance.
