Adding tweeters..............

I was thinking of buying tweeters. Can I splice them into my 6 x 9's and mount them close by? Any opinions on using tweeters?

Yeah you could do that. Most tweeters come with a passive crossover, so you'll be fine.

Just something I noticed. First where are you placing the tweeters? If you're putting them in the front you want to splice into your front speakers. If you are putting them in the back, what's the need? The 6x9's simply fill in the area behind you, some people like it some don't. Either way I woulden't want a tweeter firing into my ear from the rear.

I'm not critisizing your decision, just curious.

Yep I did that once and you can use the vents to adjust the direction of the sound

What Amp are you using to power the 6x9's? If you're using the decks internal amp and you wire 4ohm tweeters in parallel with the 6x9's you will have a two ohm resistance and your decks amp will shut down because it can't handle a two ohm load. If you're using a 4 channel 600 watt amp to power the 6x9's and subs most aftermarket amps can handle the 2 ohm load and you won't have any problems. Just talking from experience, I wired two pioneer tweeters on the A pillar in parallel with the dash 4x6's using my Pioneer decks internal Mosfet amp to power them. It worked fine for about 5 months then one day the pioneers Amp just stopped working except the external amp powering my bazooka sub. After a lot of checking out I finally disconnected the tweeters and everything was fine.

The amp is a two channel- 600 watt that just powers the subs. I wanted to splice the tweeters into the Jensen 5 1/4's, that I have in the dash. I've seen many people splice tweeters into component speakers and they have had no problems. What about all the loaded enclosures that have subs with tweeters, that run parallel from the factory? If anyone could clear this up for me, it would be appreciated!

I would agree that if you was wanting to run the tweets with the 5 1/4's run them in series to eliminate the possiblity of burning up your headunit. It might work fine with no problems but then again why risk it?

There are many different configurations to hook up different speakers, parallel, series, parallel+series, parallel+series+parallel and on and on. Each example ends up with the total amount of speaker resistance anywhere from say 16ohms to 0.5 ohms. The only way you could hook up two 4ohm speakers (your 5 1/4" and tweeters) is with parallel wiring: positive to positive negative to negative which will bring the speaker resistance to 2 ohms or Series wiring: pos of one speaker to neg of the other speaker and neg back to pos which would bring the resistance to 8 ohms. If you hooked up the two speakers in Series, there would also be less volume from those speakers. That's why most Amps have specs for 2ohm resistances because you get more power from amps that were designed for it. Pre made speaker enclosures have the speakers wired inside to have the final resistance at usually 4 ohms. Hope this helps.
