1.5 din

I really need a CD player these days.
Surely someone has put a regular size radio in a thirdgen. Does a normal reciever fit OK with an adapter? I've seen a few 1.5 din replacements, but they're stupid looking. Would the extra space around a normal unit make it easier to steal?

Go Alpine DIN 1.5....

ALL 3rd gen radios are easy to steal, just need a 7mm nut driver.

Most people don't waste their time with a 7mm socket. Their tool of choice is a large, flat screwdriver.

Anyway, there are a million different kits available to mount a single DIN radio into GM cars. The problem is, most of them stick out because there isn't enough depth in the dash. In Camaros you can just remove the rear brace and you get a lot more room. In firebirds you need to hack the backside of the console. In both cars it may be necessary to cut the molded heat ducts for extra room.

A much nicer install can be done by making your own mounting kit. Here's how I installed my Kenwood into my IROC:

Once I shimmed the wood to the depth I wanted, I built a trim ring out of 1/8" plexiglass. The one in the picture is beat up because it's been through some previous installations, but you get the point. Once I got it to the right size, I hot-glued it to the stock trim ring with high temp rubberized glue.

I've got pics of the car with my Alpine deck in it (The Kenwood committed hari-kari a couple weeks ago) and if I remember, I'll upload them tonight.

Crap, I have a Firebird.
Does Alpine make a 1.5 made to GM factory specs so it'll fit correctly?

Thanx for the pics, it looks like your factory radio is now on the shifter console, plus you have room for another radio in the control panel console! That's a pretty good trick!

That same radio used to be in my firebird with the same installation. The cutting and modifications are cake if you take the radio/heater console out of the car. It's just time consuming.

Anyway, Alpine makes a couple 1.5 DIN radios but they're extremely overpriced, as are everybody elses 1.5 DIN units.

I've got a Pioneer CD Headunit (1.5 din) in my GTA and am very happy with it.

I was considering a 1.5 DIN for awhile but also came to the conclusion that they are overpriced. You can get a DIN unit with many more features for less money. My Alpine cost $299 and I'm glad I got it instead of the 1.5 unit.
