Lightning Cap Charging Question...
i have a question...
why do you have to charge your lightning cap before you install it? when you hook it up, doesnt it get charged when you turn the car on? i guess i just dont understand this charging the cap thing, also, if you do have to charge it, do you have to charge it everytime you turn the car off and on ?

I'm kinda in the same boat as Klay, why do you need to charge a Cap before you install it? I figured it would charge once you hook it to the batt.
I'm new to this stuff tho, so please give me the info on this cap stuff...

If you don't charge it first via resistor or light you'll find out the hard way. when a capacitor is in a discharged state it looks like 0ohms accross the terminals .. hence a dead short.. as it starts to charge up the resistance increases.. if you hook your power direct to a dead cap (especially a 1 farad) you'll get quite the spark and you can damage and /or blow the capacitor. you only have to charge it once. If you disconnect the battery you'll have to charge it again.. what I do is pull the fuse out for my sub amp which is where the cap is.. then disconnect your battery.. after you reconnect the battery put the fuse back in before turning the car on .. this way you don't have to worry about charging it again..

if you got confused ...he pulls the fuse because the cap holds a charge and you must isolate it from the rest of the car so you dont drain it when disconnecting battery
