Optimum Frequency Settings

I just got my new head unit (Nakamichi CD40z) and my system installation is complete. I was wondering what the optimum frequency settings would be for my setup. My crossover has the following frequency ranges:

Tweeters (4x6) - 3,000 Hz to 10,000 Hz
Midrange (6x9)- 40 Hz to 400 Hz
Subwoofers (10")- 40 Hz to 400 Hz

Currently, I have my 4x6's set to about 6,000 Hz, the 6x9's are set to about 280 Hz, and the subs are set to 80 Hz. My head unit has a "loud" feature which basically enhances the low frequencies. The problem is the music sounds better with the Loud feature enabled, but there is quite a bit of bass (and I get a headache ). I could just turn down the subwoofer volume, but then there isn't enough bass for other songs; this is why I think I don't have my frequencies set up properly. What would be the best settings?

First off....

Good choice on the Nakamichi!!
I've got the CD-35z and simply LOVE it!!!
You don't find too many car stereos that have treble, midrange, and bass controls!

Assuming the numbers you post are the cut-off numbers....
(Meaning nothing below that number is getting to THAT speaker.)

I'd say lower your bass.
And disable the LOUD feature on the head unit.

Mine does rather well without the LOUD button.
And the loud button is mainly used for lower volumes to enhance the bass. Or at least that's what it's designed for.

Other than that it sounds like your heading in the right direction.

I tuned my Nakamichi with all the settings on the head unit at zero.
Then worked my way up from there.

Have everything flat and crank it up.
Then adjust the crossover to see what sounds good.

Then adjust the bass, midrange and treble to fine tune.

It took me over a week to get it the way I want it to sound.
