What's the usual setup, one amp for the 6x9s and 4x6s and another amp for the bass?

What's the usual setup, one amp for the 6x9s and 4x6s and another amp for the bass?

I heard a band a school this year that had absolutely perfect sound quality, unlike the blaring, tinny highs and weak bass of most outfits...I talked to the sound guy, and he said they simply had a TON of power, way more than they needed, and the sound was full and incredible...so I want to do this right. Is it common practice to power the speakers with one amp and the bass with another? That would make sense...would the Kicker ZR240 be sufficient to power the speakers very well? Thanks for the input...

Our ZR240 is a great 2 channel amp.If you are looking for a simple one amp, to power the 4x6's and 6x9's,yet have a sub amp, look at our Kicker IX405D. 40x4 for the front and rear, gain/eq and crossover settings. the on the rear sub channel, it's a class D mono amp with 390 watts, and a remote gain.

That is how my setup is, One 4 channel Alpine for the highs and one Rockford Fosgate 500a2 for the JL 12W6 sub.

Actually, at the time this pic was taken, I was using my Soundstream Reference 300sx 2 channel amp to power my 4 highs.
I have the alpine now, but no current picture available at this moment.

Forgive my dumb questions, but my Pioneer DEH-P77DH deck is advertised at 45x4, but it's way less power than I want...I'm guessing the IX405D's 40x4 is a typically conservative Kicker rating on a butt-kicking amp...am I right?

Two different ratings. The Pioneer 45x4 is max power, which is what it can produce for a very short burst. The Kicker rating is a conservative RMS or continuous power rating, which is what can be produced constantly. The peioneer head unit and just about all the other high quality HUs actually produces about 13 watts RMS. When looking at power ratings, peak or max power are meaningless. RMS or continuous are what you look at, but since there is no industry standard for measuring output or power handling, most of those ratings must be taken with a grain of salt.

That's a good way to wire your setup. Use a good 2 channel amp for the bass and a decent 4 channel amp for the other speakers. Even the best 6x9's don't put out good bass, thats where the subs compensate.

The Pioneer DEH-P77 is actually good for about 20 watts RMS, which is plenty for 4x6's and can get very good sound out of 6x9's. With a Pioneer head unit another good setup would be to run the fronts through the head unit, the 6x9's through a 2 channel amp and the sub through a 2 channel bridged or a mono amp. Save you a couple of bucks and you'll still get great sound.

Actually, that is backwards, for correct imaging and assuming you have good speakers amp the 4x6s and run the 6x8s off the HU.

I agree you need more/better power up front for proper staging.

The IX405D is actually more than 40x4. It will put out conservative 45-50 watts x 4. Then the 390 mono to the subs.
