Remote Faceplate
Ok, so I was reading on here a while back on mounting your faceplate for your HU remotely and thought this would be awsome. I hate the glare I get on mine from the sunlight. N E way, I did some searches for the post I was reading and can't find it anywhere. So I guess I'll just ask. How do you do this? Some specifics would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Good with a Soldering Gun? Use a cable with alot of small wires in it kind of like a telephone cord. Make the faceplate wired by soldering the connectors from the faceplate to the headunit. You may need a few wires to do it as there's quite a few connectors there.

So just what kinda wire, and would it be possible to make a sort of extension cord, with the male and female ports on either end, rather than solder. That way it would still be detachable.

Using some type of connectors I don't think would work. I would say that's one of the reasons you don't see this done that often. Or atleast when I've thought about doing it I decided not too because I didn't want to ruin the ability of putting my HU back to normal. I can't think of any type of cable with alot of wires in it other than a Telephone cord. It has 4 wires in it and it's overall diameter is quite small so that's what I'd try. Maybe someone else could give some suggestions as to a cable that would work better.

you can get all sorts of different ribbon cables from radio shack. If you really needed to still make it detachable, you'd have to do a hatchet-job on the deck to take the contact patch off and relocate that part too. Of course, to keep the faceplate secure, you'd basically need to remove the whole front of the radio and put it behind the faceplate.
Or... get a 2nd radio to chop up.

Ok now i really wouldn't recomend using cat 5 line or telephone wire. I've done this mod to mine and a few other show cars.
I work with one of my buddies who owns elliot electronics in okc.
He does work for toyz with nouize and many others. I will post pics of kine when it is done but i fried my faceplate so it will be a little while. Oh and by the way pc ribbon cable is the best it'll be reall hard strip it back but try to keep the bare wire to less then a mm. One other thing to think about is the length of the wire.
Some units i've done couldn't take more then 3 feet and some that took over 20 and no problems. It is difficult but worth while in the end and looks bad. Turns alot of heads.

If you would like to you can use cat 5. Just in my experience ribbon cable is alot cheaper and easier to work with. Also a flat thin ribbon cable will lay smooth inbetween the two peice case on your deck and easier to get to fit coming out of the faceplate. Where the round larger cat 5 would require a nice sized hole.
I have done one panasonic but it was a older one but it could only got about 3 feet and then it started showing weird characters and acting funky.
Good luck
P.S. a magnifing glass and a very small soldering tip help out alot.

how about 10 core thermostat wire(like the kind used on house furnaces)its only about a 1/4 inch round and has 10 solid copper wires in it,,wouldnt the solid wires make soldering easier?
