PAC Steering Wheel Interface Install.....
OH MY GOD....! This is too easy!
Folks, this is the way to go by all means. So easy that even a dummy like me can pull this off with no problems.
Installing this product requires the use of a radio which has a wireless remote control. So long as you have one with this feature, it's really quite simple.
Here is the PAC unit itself:
The interface works off of three wires: red for power, black for ground, and green for the steering wheel control wires. It is selectable for use on Ford or GM products.
On the 1987-1989 GTAs, the switched power wire for the stereo is yellow, the ground wire is blue/gray, and the steering wheel wire is the orange wire from the plug. These wires are connected to the PAC wires. There is also a flat black LED wire that must be placed near the front of the radio after the installation is complete.
The stereo I chose to use is the Pioneer DEH-P77DH, the top-line unit they offer as a direct 1.5 DIN fit for GM and Chrysler products. Featuring a detachable faceplate for theft protection, this radio has a wireless remote control included with the unit as purchased. Here it is:
Pioneer also offers a direct adapter plug for GM 21-pin radios to make the installation a snap:
The PAC wiring is fairly straightforward, as simple wire line taps will suffice for the three connections described above.... as you see below:
The PAC unit itself will store quite nicely right above the stereo on a little "shelf" next to the HVAC control head. It is out of the way, but readily accessible when the radio is pulled out. The wiring can then be coiled and placed in the back of the radio compartment. The LED cord will thread throught the dash panel on the RH side and nestle right under the center HVAC vent. Barely visible, it is in perfect position to control the stereo:
The Pioneer unit is 1/2" deeper than the OEM radio, so clearance is an issue. Naturally, this may not be an issue on other radio models. The rear support breacket can be pushed rearward in the compartment to give the proper space for the radio to slide into place:
After this, it is simply a matter of programming the remote functions into the new setup. Detailed instructions are included with the interface, and are easy to complete. The only drawback is the steering wheel controls can only be programmed as far as the the functions used on the original remote control, i.e., some original functions may be lost from radio model to model. A plus is that the new setup will also control the CD player from the wheel as well, since those controls are also controlled by the radio's original remote control. So it's kind of a trade-off of sorts.....
When you're done, here's what you get:
A nice, clean looking installation with a new CD player in your car.... and fully functioning steering wheel controls for it as well!
Try it..... I think you'll find yourself very happy with the results!
