Question on powering old Bazooka with amp
I've been using an 80 watt powered 8" Bazooka in my car. It was not sounding too bad, but recently the amp died.
So, I took the amp off the back of the tube and soldered some speaker wire onto the 8" driver. I had a Kenwood amp laying around that bridged to 140 watts (I think) and I hooked that up to it. I left the back of the tube (where the original amp was open).
When I played it, it didn't sound very good. The speaker cracks and pops when I turn the volume up even a little bit.
Now I know I should just ditch the tube and tiny sub and go get a 10" or 12" in a box and run it with the Kenwood, but in the meantime, is it popping and sounding crappy 'cause it is getting too much power? Or should I figure out a way to seal up the end of the tube where the original amp was? Any ideas?

Sounds to me like the sub is hitting bottom. Get something to seal it up even if you have to use the old amp to creat that seal.
The only other thing I can think is that there is a wire loose somewhere, and when the sub hits it's causing the wire to wiggle which might cause the noise you're hearing.
Also try the amp on other speakers to see if it's not the amp.

It needed to be sealed... I routed my speaker wire through the port and put the old amp back in place. That took care of the popping.
I am probably still going to think about upgrading though....
