TrueBlue sent me a piece of RAAMmat to compare to my Dynamat Extreme.

NOTE: ALL I SAY, ARE JUST OBSERVATIONS, I DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH MATERIAL TO ACTUALLY DO A SIDE BY SIDE INSTALL TO TEST EACH MATERIALS EFFECTIVENESS!!

First off, the products are not identical like some claim.
Dynamat has a much thicker aluminum layer. The Dynamat is harder to install due to the thicker aluminum. You really have to push it and use a roller or other tool to get in small areas.

RAAMmat's aluminum layer is much thinner, almost soft. As a result, easier to install, but seems less effective.

As far as the sitcky stuff, Dynamat is thicker, and seems to be a tad stickier.

Don't get me wrong, RAAMmat seems to be a good product, and is worlds beyond any other dynamat. From looks, it seems like 2 layers of raammat will do the job of 1 layer of dynamat extreme. Doubled up, it may even be slightly more effective.

Price no object ? I choose Dynamat.

But price is an object.

RAAMmat is like $70 for 50 sq ft. Cost per sq ft = $1.40
Dynamat Extreme "RETAIL" is about $200 per 36 sq ft. Cost per sq ft = $5.50
Dynamat Extreme can be had for $150 per 36 sq ft easily on the net. Cost per sq ft = $4.16

Price / performance ? Definately RAAMmat. In fact, you can double up, get the performace of dynamat, and still be cheaper. For almost the same price as Dyn. Extreme off the net ($4.16 / sq ft), you can triple layer the RAAMmat, which I have no doubt will out do Dyn. Extreme.

Good to hear that the stuff arrived, I wasn't sure if customs would have some issues with my sending a weird piece of sticky foil over the boarder in an envelope. My piece hasn't arrived yet.

The test results surprise me a bit. The RAAMmat guy advertises that his material is 45 mils thick compared to Dynamat Extreme's 44 mils. I want to go back and check that for sure, though. Maybe he meant regular dynamat, but I don't think so because (if I remember correctly) he was making most of his comparison statements with regards to how it stacked up against Dynamat Extreme.

Regardless, thanks for the analysis, DJ. I really appreciate the effort. And if anyone's gonna be able to give a knowledgable, objective opinion on sound deadening material, it's going be the guy who's already decked out the entire interior of his car with the stuff!

Anyway, it's better to find out now 'cause I haven't started doing my car yet. I don't think I can afford to double up on every area, but I'll certainly be paying more attention to the important spots.

might benefit you to look into something called ice gaurd as well for your horizontal surfaces of the vehicle. this is used in roofing and will do exactly the same as dynamat will, at a fraction of the cost. 60 dollars for 2 10x10 squares. Like i said though, it is best used on flat surfaces because after time, it tends to come off of vertical panels.

you can get it at home depot or lowes.

for 60 dollars i deadened both of my cars, it was well worth it.

45mm thick? That's nearly 2 inches. How do you get away with putting that underneath the carpet, that seems like a lot.

Anyway, I really need to soundproof my car too. The only thing I need to know is though, when doing so should I stick the soundproofing (let's say in the trunk area) to the inside of the body panels, or to the inside of the plastic interior panels, or both?

is not true. dynamat is 44 mils thick, where as rammat is 45 mils this. dynamat extreme might feel thicker because of the aluminum but it is not. it is actually thinner.

I used plenty of rammat before I started Second Skin. it is a good product and is hard to beat.
especially Rammat 60.

You have to remember that this test was quite an old one when you consider the development of RAAMmat. The comparison piece was a piece of original RAAMmat, and there have been at least two versions since then. The latest (the aforementioned V60) is a LOT better than the original... noticably thicker and much higher quality and it must compare a lot better to the Dynamat Extreme (while being only $20 more per roll than the original).

That said, I'm a big RAAMmat supporter. I've used the stuff religiously for a couple of years now with great results.

I'll tell you the same thing Rick told me: minimum two rolls, probably three to be safe and sure. I'm doubling up in various areas so I needed three for sure. RAAMmat v60 is going for $79 per 62.5 sq.ft. roll right now on Ebay and there's also the option of getting his b-stock matting for $59 per if it's still available.

WHAT!!!!! If 1mm was really equal to 0.1mils, that would mean it would take 450mm (roughly 17.7") inches to equal 45mils... (you were closer when you said 1/10 of a mm, but you were still off by four times)

1mil is 1/1000th of an inch. (0.001") That means it (45mils) would take 22 layers to be one (1) inch thick!!!!!!!

HAHA... Leave it to you Camaro guys to be driving around with almost 18" of sound deadener in your cars!!!! (52" if you use the triple Raammat method as the one guy suggests...)

And by the way, RC83, no troubles to worry about... 160k miles on a 2000 GT, I will drive it until I trade it in for an '09 when the next update comes out... No rush though, still runs great, but thank you for your concern.

Actually, I am hoping the Camaro and the Challenger are both out by the time the new Mustang hits the dealer's floors in '09 (or late '08, if I'm lucky)... Maybe with that much competition in the sales department, the dealers will have a tougher time gouging the buyers (good for you guys too)... Almost thought about buying an '05 GT (in '04), but some dealers thought they could even mark up the V6's! I like Mustangs and all, but $2000 over sticker for a V6 (and even more for a GT)??? They have got to be kidding, although at that time there was no competition in that class.

I won't buy a V8 until I can buy it for fleet pricing.

I owned a mustang 4 1 month. it was a 2000 sc cobra. it was ok but not as fast as my iroc. so i sold it for $2000.00 to my lil sister it had 125k on the tach!

i paid $1500.00 for it , it was wrecked in the front and back. so i got it fixed cheap from our painters.they fixed and painted it for $750.00. the still had a clean title come to find out the car was repoed and thats how it looked when they pulled it out the drive way and the person only owed 2 payments of $365.00. so i got a good deal. i was @ the auction the other day and they had a mach1 going 4 13000.00 with 86k on it so i got lucky with that cobra.
