99 Grand Am GT headunit in 86 TA....small prob...ideas??

Ok....i bought this headunit out of this guy's car for 200 bucks new(worth $900 new at dealer)because he installed some crazy-@$$ system in his grand am. My new headunit fits/works perfectly...except for one thing. When i try to lower the volume, sometimes, it seems to get higher first, and then, as i am turning the volume down further, it gets more quiet. Now, when i had my old factory speakers removed(kenwood 6x9's in rear, and polk auido 4x6 plates in front now), the rears were a strange set up. My friend at the shop who sold me the dash unit said that they have never seen an F-Body with that setup. The rears consisted of NOT 6x9's, but two round main speakers, and two smaller round speakers(subs)(dont know the sizes)....these were from the factory. My 86 came with a switch on the dash to control those "subs"...and when i was in high school they worked fine. before i replaced them with the 6x9's, they were already shot. Now, that switch on the dash is there, but disabled of course. I had to get new mounting brackets for the 6x9's that i put in from a junked TA at a local junkyard...the old "bracket" was made of plastic and had a strange shape to it to hold those other 4 speakers i mentioned that came from the factory. So, after much rambling on, my quesitons are: what could cause that headunit to do that and what can be done, and what the hell kind of setup did i have that came from the factory(maybe some sort of Bose setup?), and does anyone have/had that setup before? Thanks in advance.

The speaker system you speak of is the UQ7 Subwoofer Sound System, available on Firebirds from 1984-1988. Two of my three GTAs have this sound system. It sounds fair at low volume, but quickly runs out of steam as the volume is increased. Still, an interesting little tidbit to have. Luckily, I haven't had to try to replace any speakers yet.....

As for your volume problem, I believe that some newer GM stereos have a built-in function that regulates volume according the the degree of noise in the interior of the car..... do you think this might be something to consider? If your deck has this feature, maybe there is a conflict somewhere.

Just a thought on the 2nd issue.....

Frankie...

That subwoofer system i guess wasnt very popular or something, becasue the two install shops i went to before i had my speakers put it, had questionmarks looming over their heads when they saw that setup. But thank you for the information.

As far as the new GM CD player i have in there, i will have to look at the photocopied manual pages for the stereo that i got from my friend that i bought it off of. I dont think it has speed/noise compensated volume, but i will find out. Its just a small annoying issue. Other than that, i am completely happy with the deck. I wanted something more sophisticated, but also something that looked totally stock...and this accomplishes that. Thanks for everything.
