4-channel amp+one set of preamps-speaker level inputs= what to do?

Ok, here's the deal. This isn't for my Camaro, but for my dad's '29 Ford Streetrod...

He's got a JVC head unit, with one set of pre-amps. He's got a 4-channel Directed amp, with no speaker level inputs (like I told him he needed). My question is:

Can I take the regular wires off the back of the reciever (not the preamps), and splice them into a set of RCA's? I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I just want to make 100% sure.... Thanks!

Just get a pair of Y cables, they will split the signal from the single set of pre outs.

Yeah, but number one, I want to be able to fade it front to rear. And, number two, he's already installed the reciever and run the wires (he got way ahead of me... this was supposed to be my part of the resto... from day one. ), and now he has no room to plug the RCA's into the back of the reciever.

So, splicing the RCA's into the wires is really the only choice. Either that, or have him buy another amp (once again, he got ahead of me and just brought one home.... we were supposed to get a kick *** MTX one from Crutchfield, and he goes to the discount stereo store and buys a Directed (never even heard of them) for $150...).

You can't run speaker-level inputs directly into the rca input of an amp. You'll overload the pre-amp. How badly do you really need to fade front to back? That's one of those things that you set once then never touch again. If that's the case, use the "Y" connector and use the gain control to set your fader as you want it. If having a fader is really that important, get a line output converter to convert your speaker level signal to a line level signal. Just be fore warned that unless you pay big bucks for a custom made one, the sound quality is going to suffer somewhat.

There's also the idea of adding an equalizer to split one set of preamps into 2 or three (front/rear/subs). And I agree with Jim; line-output-convertors aren't as clear as a true line-level hookup.

I have used line level converters and they work alright if you get a resonable one. I don't think sound quality is going to be a big difference becasue we are not talking premium gear. The line convert is a cheap and easy way to get out of a bind. Best cheap fix would be split the RCA's and adjust your gains though.

Very true; the three systems I heard with the line-level convertors (one of which was my first system) didn't have expensive ones. And the sound in mine was good at low volume, it just distorted to hell when it was cranked. When I got rid of those, and split the rca's, the sound quality increased at louder volume levels. I gave 'em away to someone as a "gift"
