4th gen Pontiac CD player in 3d gen dash?

Sorry to post such an elementary question, but I can't find the answer. Will the dimensions of a 1993-up Pontiac CD player prevent it from mounting flush in a 1992 Firebird? I understand the wiring harnesses differ but that you can get adapters. Is the newer-model radio deeper than the older-model radio?

Thanks in advance.

I would just get a aftermarkett CD Player unless your already have the 4thgen Player or something. It should fit though I would think?

Yes, it will fit, but it depends on what you have behind your dash. There isn't as much room behind the 82-84 Firebird radios as there are in the 85-ups. That is a mod I am doing as well. I am going to a 4th gen console and 85 - up radio pod. I'll keep you posted.

I know I could do that, but I want to keep it stock - largely because I like the original red glow of the dials. Besides, there's no point spending lots of money for premium sound in my convertible. So I really want a Pontiac unit. Pricy though...which is why I want to find out if it fits before I spend the money to buy one.

I have a frined with a 86-87 TA and he has a 4th gen camaro CD player in it.

From what I understand, the monsoon headunits should be plug and play in a 92. As I think your car has the standard 89+ GM 3 rectangle plugs.

(Looks somethign like this)

I just learned from a vendor that the unit dimensions are the same but the mounting brackets are not. Apparently you have to grind off the brackets from the 4th gen housing and mount the third gen brackets on the 4th gen housing. Ouch! I'm a bit leary of screwing up the innards of the 4th gen unit, with metal shavings and all. Any suggestions on how I can do it without doing damage to the head unit?

BTW the same vendor sells the correct 1992 head unit with CD - for $450! Wow. I could buy a pretty nice aftermarket head unit for that! 'Course in a convertible it would be wasted AND a magnet for thieves.

I once put a 00 Monte CD player in a 98 Cavalere and had to grind **** away to change the way it mounted. To keep the shavings out of the way I just put magnets on anything I could so the shavings went to the magnets and I expoxied the new brackets on. It took about 4 hours time total and alot of patients but it did work. Also take your time and measure EVERYTHING dealing witht he brackets. You will thanks yourself.
