Power Antenna - Up but not down

'89 RS here - my power antenna has just recently started refusing to go down, and the motor is running constantly when the engine is off. My first thought was a broken cable, but but the kicker is when I have pushed the antenna down, if I start the engine it will go back up! I can also only push it down when the engine is off - when the car is running it's locked in the 'up' position. To my knowledge the cable runs both up and down functions, so I assume this can't be it - so any thoughts as to what it could be?

The antenna got bent slightly a couple of years ago, but this hasn't been a problem up until now. I've had to pull the ACC fuse to stop the motor running for now, but it'd be good to know what exactly is wrong!

The cable does run both up and down. Last two times I had one break the cable broke going up and it got stuck that way, Probably needs a rebuild. I rebuilt mine with a NOS cable and it broke again the next year I just rebuilt again with a steel cable version from ecklers

Do you have a link or part number for this Ecklers steel cable mast?

Re: Power Antenna - Up but not down

That has a steel cable instead of plastic? In the picture it looks plastic unless that is a sleeve or coating on it.

Says 1982 to 1988 Firebird. I didn't know there was a different power antenna over the years. All the ones I've had to replace or rebuild have been on 1989 and up so far.

That is the exact one I ordered for my 84 firebird it came with a steel cable. Make sure you put in your year for correct application

Repairing the original is a relatively easy fix if you can solder- just some food for thought. Epoxy might also be a decent solution without soldering if you make sure to get contact between the mast and the cable.
