The 6X9's in our cars
I have a decent pair of 6X9's in the back of my car, but they sound crappy - there is no bass response whatsoever. Is this because of the vent panels in the doors? I'm assuming these vent's ruin the 'seal' for the enclosure.
Has anyone tried to remedy this problem, and if so what did you do?
Also, one of them pops once in a while and is more frequent at higher volumes - what can cause that? Can reversed wires cause it?

I'm only using them for bass until I can afford to go spend money on a bass tube (which i used to have until some ***** stold it).
Besides, these same 6X9's (blaupunkt) produced a pretty respectable amount of bass for this type of speaker in my old car (bottom mounted in a trunk), but sound like **** in my camaro (using the same head unit too). why?

First, make sure the wires are hooked up right and the polarity is not reversed. I ended up amping my 6x9s and that helped them a hell of a lot, but I don't run bass to them. My hpf is set at 100 or 125. The reason you don't hear much bass is because the speakers are aimed directly at one another and the sound waves cancel each other. Try sticking your head in the back seat between the two speakers and it will probably sound a hell of a lot better than it does in front.

Yeah, don't expect bass from those back speakers.

Has anyone ever tried to reverse the polarity on one of the 6x9's. it might stop the canceling . has anyone ever tried this. Im too lazy right now to go to the car and try it.

Out of curiosity, does anyone else have wood cutouts that the 6x9's mount to? I think somebody was messing around with the car I have before I got it. There is no seal and the speakers mount to a wooden cutout screwed into a piece of metal. What do these things have for a factory mount?

from the factory they have a piece of metal screwed into the body...this piece has a 6x9 cutout to which your speakers mount. it sucks because it rattles a lot, along w/ the rest of the panels in the back. Im going nuts trying to stop everything from rattling in the back of my car!!!

I have this same problem as everyone else does with rattling. My 6x9s sound really good for rock but suck for rap because of single deep bass hits. I am looking into buying dynamat substitutes like l-mat http://www.l-mat.com
They claim that l-mat super is the same as dynamat. Has anyone else used this stuff or even heard of it? I plan on buying some in the near future.

I have never heard or heard of 6x9 cancelling eachother out because they were pointed at one another. There is more than enogh space between the two. I have Cerwin Vega 6x9s and they sound great. Double check the polarities.
jayman350,
In order to cure your distortion at low bass notes, try using capacitors in the 700mhz? range a.k.a. bass blockers. They prevent the ultra-low signal from reaching the speaker. They wire in to the positive polarity at the speaker and cost about $10 a pair for good ones.

I am not getting distortion from my speakers, its the body panels rattling when the bass hits. If its constant bass then it isn't too bad but if it is a bunch of single bass hits like in a song like country grammar then it rattles the hell out of the body panels behind it(really annoying)
I was amazed how much different the 6x9s sound when you stick your head back there from the front seat. Chevy really didn't think through the design of putting them directly facing each other. Has anyone changed the position of these? maybe angled them forward a little?

There is no way to EVER get decent bass out of 6x9s in third gens...I should know, I've tried!!!
2manywants,
Don't waste your $$ on a bass tube...save up longer and get a decent sub, amp and box. You'll be happier in the long run.

I got the local stereo shop to make me some custom speaker mounting pannels that fit pioneer 6 1/2in Componets in place of the 6X9 pannels. The Componets come with their own crossover so there's no exstream lowpass signals going to them. This and then dynomatting the inside of the speaker compartment brings the rattle to virtually nothing and its the cleanest sounding setup I've heard so far.
The 6X9 usually can transmit really low signals which is the soul cause of the rattling. With 6X9's your best set is to buy some expensive *** dynomatt and line the speaker compartment. Making some new speaker mounting pannels out of wood will also help a great deal in sealing off the enclosure and help keep it from rattling. The only problem is that the origional pannels are about 1/4in thick, so I wouldn't go with wood any thicker than 1/2in or 3/4in for clearence purposses.
P.S. Do not reverse the poles on the speakers unless you want to buy some new ones.

I already had a bass tube and loved it - I will most definitely be getting another. It's fine for what I need, and saved me a lot of money plus it even leaves a little room in the well if I ever need to put a few things back there. Not only that, but it doesn't attract as much attention as dual 12's in a fancy box (although that didn't prevent someone from stealing my first one anyway). Also, there is a lot less rattling too worry about.
If you get the one's w/o the built in amp and get a decent amp, the sound great to me.
