Infinity Kappas or New Reference?
I'm getting my sister new speakers for her car for christmas. Crutchfield is running a sale on 6 1/2s Kappas, buy one pair get one half price. For the same price I can get the new Reference design. Which should I go with?

I personally wouldn't do either one. They sound awesome, but here's why I wouldn't.
I had 6x9 Kappas and 4x6 New References. The Kappas were a year and a half old, and when I went to run new speaker wire for my amp, I popped off the grilles and lo and behold, the cones had warped! They sounded fine, but the cones were all distorted.
I then took my dashpad off and saw my 3 month old References had cracks in the woofers, running from the center of the woofer to the edge. Again, they sounded fine, but it was only a matter of time before the cones would have disintegrated!
I am not the only person who's had problems with Infinity cones. I have 2 friends who have had Kappa 6.5s warp, and a guy on here had a pair of 4x6s literally break apart and shatter under his dash.
Don't get me wrong, I loved my Infinitys sound quality. But if I had waited another 6 months, I may not have had any speakers at all. After telling everyone how much I loved mine, I will never purchase another Infinity car product.

Maybe Infinity had a bad batch. My 4x6 dash kappa plates are 5 years old and still look new, and thats in the AZ summer heat.

The cones cracked, wow. That's the first I've heard anyone realy complain about Infinities. I'll have to check my 6x9's.
Anyone else? Now I really can't make up my mind!

I've got Reference series and they're atleast three years old, I've had them in and out a couple of times and I never had any problems with them. They sound great, and they're being pushed by a Kenford amp. I love them. Sorry to those who had problems.

My 3 year old 4x6 kappa plates.....I guess black cars get hot or something....
They sounded good til they got all distorted when the cone blew up....my kappa 6x9s are kinda warped too they still sound ok though

That sucks!!!! Did you try getting ahold of Infinity? Even if they aren't still under warranty, they might be cool about it and replace them. Just a thought.
