Car Alarm Question

Hi,
First off glad the sites back up, but anyways I just finished installing a Crimestopper 2005FM Car Alarm. Everything went well except the remote start. It will turn the car on (it energizes the fuel pump, like the keys in the ignition) and then quit quickly. It doesnt even turn over the starter. I tried it in both tachless and then tach monitor mode. I ran a single strand 18 guage wire from the purple/white wire off the 4 wire weather pak connector on the distributor for the monitor mode. Im out of ideas so any help is appreciated!

Thanks
Martin

What year is your car? Later 3rd gens had the VATS. Does your key have the little resistor chip in it?

Its an 89 IROC, so it could be the vats, but wouldnt the security light come on or the starter crank? The alarm only trys for about 3-4 seconds? Sorry, forgot bout that in the original post.

Thanks

If you have VATS, with your remote start manual it should tell you what value of resistor to install right onto the ignition wire to "fool" it into thinking the key is in the ignition. If not, just about every alarm manufacturer has an installer help line that you could call.

There will be a few different choices. Just take a multimeter to measure the chip in your key to find the range you need.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot guys! I wasnt sure if it was the vats, but Ill go ahead and bypass it, and Ill give their tech support a call too. Any other ideas?

No luck bypassing the vats. I matched the value of the resistor in my key and jumpered the purple/white, black/white, (vats) wires. Car still just turned on and off quickly. Any other ideas?

Thanks

double check your remote starter wiring to your ign1 and ign2 leads..and so on, sounds like you have one reversed

Does it actually start? or just turn over and then shut off.

If it just turns over and then shuts off without actually "running" then double check your Tach (RPM) wire (white wire I believe) to make sure that the remote start knows when to stop cranking. Also make sure there is no way to program the RPM limit before the remote start lets the car run on it's own power.

My Viper was able to be set with a laptop.

If it never actually cranks, then there is still a problem with the VATS.

Sorry bout the confusion, it energizes the car but never engages the starter. It turns the car on and off. It doesnt even try to crank the car (no noise, and no gauge movement). Also I tried the vats resistor, leaving the key in, and am sure thats not the only problem(may be part of it, but I did add the correct resistance in). Thanks for all the replys hopefully Ill get this worked out soon.

Thanks
Martin

Ok, if it won't turn over even with the key in the ignition, then it's not even a VATS problem. There is something else not right in the system.

I know that's what it does whenever my fuse blows between the remote start and the ignition wiring.

The key in the ignition will bypass the VATS all together, so I would recomend getting the remote start to work while leaving the key in there until you figure out what is wrong elsewhere.

i have had similar problems on some gm cars doing the same thing. even on my own camaro. you would remote start it and it would turn on the igniion but wouldnt fire the starter. according to the tech tip from code alarm. some gm cars with v8 motors need more amps then the 30 amp relay in the remote start. do to the high compression ratio. they suggest installing another thirty amp relay inline with the relay output of the remote starter. they also suggest getting power for this realy from the battery. i have tryed it and it does work. also if i am not mistaking the gm vat wire colors for camaros was a small 22 awg yellow wire that you loop over with the correct resistor value to a small thin black wire. there shouls be 3 wire coming from the ignition colume. hope this helps.

Thanks A lot chrisfrerick and GndPrx, I was actually able to solve it. Apparently I, making yet another mistake, wired the brake switch (kills start when 12 volts is shown), to the wrong wire. Now it works. Thanks for all the input its always helpful.
