Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
Hey Everyone,
It's been a while since I've been on the site since I got rid of my Trans Am, miss that car lol.
But I wanted some input, I was wanting to see if there is any interest in fiberglass speaker pods for the Camaro/firebird doors?
I still had my templates from the pods I built for my TA, and I can pull a mold off that to sell.
Thing is, if there isn't any genuine interest I'm not going to pursue making them. If I do make them, I would put them on eBay for $225 shipped a set or $205 shipped a set here

I would be interested, but I'm not sure they would work with the GTA deluxe door panels or not....

Yeah it wouldn't, it would have to be the flat door panels with power windows...mine actually had those type of panels when I got my car...I ended up making some flat ones from scratch as you can see in the pics

Yeah, a set of pods to replace the map pockets on GTA door panels would be great. A local shop quoted me almost $300 for a pair. And they're the only thing holding me back from actually having music in the car again.

They probably aren't for me, but they look very nicely done...a very nice shape.

Re: Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
Thanks guys, I made some GTA door pods years ago, if I can get my hands on some junk GTA door panels it would def be doable.
If someone wanted to "donate" a set of junk GTA door panels and ship them to me, we could trade out for a set of fiberglass pods when I have them done.
I'm trustworthy, have good feedback here and eBay - so I didn't want anyone to think I was scamming http://www.ebay.com/usr/1971camaroguy
It would take me about a month to finish them, with the other stuff I have going on. Could be sooner, but that's what I wanted to allow as the max.

Re: Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
I prefer to leave it up to the end user to finish them out, covering them in vinyl or painting them ect..
If I put them on ebay it will be about $10 higher to cover the eBay fees.

That's not a bad price... I can cut the hole to the right size....
Maybe customize the area where the other hole would be to hold the crossover...
I see in the holes, looks like 2 sheets of wood... maybe trim where the 2nd speaker would go to have more depth for crossover...
I have a set of the last MB Quarts made in Germany before being sold and made in China

Re: Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
It's going to take some time to get them done,. I have a full time job and do this on the side. I do have them built now - just need to sand, sand and sand lol
I just finished some plugs for 1978-1981 Fbody speaker pods. I planned on pulling the molds in the next few days.
It's a slow process because with the way the temps are right now and working I have to wait 24 hours to sand after I prime these parts. I prime one day after work, then come in the next day after work and sand.

Keep in mind your looking at my old wood/fiberglass pods I made for my car. These will look exactly like those but will be 100% fiberglass.

Re: Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
So purchase price includes the wood in the fiberglass?
If so, is that removeable to cut, customize, or is it all 1 piece?
I have 2 crossover, 1 for 6.5 mid bass that would go in the door, and another cross over for 4" and tweet going in dash...

Re: Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
But being that's it's fiberglass, you can cut and shape your crossovers into them just as easy as you would a auto body panel.
On your crossovers it would be as simple as cutting a square into the area not being used by the speaker, and mounting them from behind and letting the face of the crossovers show through.

I'm still looking into this, on mine I went through the open area of the pod with four long screws straight into the door metal. It worked out because the grill covered everything up

Re: Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
I thought about it, but I was thinking about making something that would appeal to the most people and making the pods like this would allow the most flexibility, heck you can set up your speakers in several configurations per door such as
One 6.5"
Two 6.5"
Two 6.5" and a tweeter
Two 6.5", a 5-1/4" and a tweeter
and so forth.....if I made it for a single 6.5" it would limit the speaker choices
Plus if you look at the door and how it's designed, if I made a smaller pod and chopped it off it wouldn't flow as nice as one that goes from point A to Point B...it would really stick out like a sore thumb.
But I would consider doing a single one in the future if I got enough interest. I would have to have at least five or so to make it worthwhile to build

Re: Any interest in Custom fiberglass speaker pods?
The depth is what I was curious about. If I could put 2 - 6.5s in each door, shallow mount and not even have to cut the door panel. THAT would be cool!

I think you could accomplish that as these would work, but you would still have to drill holes in your panels to mount these.

Still haven't forgot this project, I still need to do some more sanding on my plugs but I am really close.
I finished my molds for the 78-81 door panels last Friday and trying to find time to dive into this again
