jim, soundstream question..

never really messed around with soundstream amps, but my buddy wants me to buy his amp off him, he just got it a few weeks ago for competition, guess hes tired of competing because he's selling his entire system.. what should i offer him for a rubicon 502 amp and a hawkins bass control remote? provided its even a decent amp.. the power from it is to go to two MTX 8000 12" 4ohm subs..

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the new soundstream stuff. Their old stuff was top notch, but then they supposidly went bankrupt and had all sorts of other stuff happen. I assume that their new stuff is the same quality as the old stuff, but to be honest I really don't know.

I have a Soundstream Reference 300sx and it is one bad little amp. I used to run my 2 4ohm subs at 2ohms and it hit very hard. I used my Premier TS-W1040C 10" subs in a sealed box. It over heated a couple of times and cut off, but came back on a few minutes later. This was in Las Vegas with a bunch of stuff in my trunk of my 94 Sunbird in 100* weather blasting the tunes for hours and hours. Drove from Virginia Beach, VA to Las Vegas, NV non-stop with the radio off only when I stopped to get gas. I was able to make the return trip back in less than 36 hours non-stop. Car had a cooling problem, would drain coolant from over-flow tube when I cut the car off, so I kept the car on for 24 hours straight, even when getting gas, until I stopped for an hour to put some coolant in cuz the low coolant light came on.
Amp was kickin' the tunes all the way home.
Now the amp is used for my highs, since my 4ch Fosgate crapped out. Brother loaned me his extra Fosgate 225.2 for one of the 10's.
Boy, this was a long post.

I have a rubicon 502 and it's not that great it's ok if you stay out of the 1 ohm(it's supposed to push 500 watts in 1 ohm) area, but it doesn't have very good protection, so don't make a mistake with it. You can go to soundstreams webpage for the specs but do not run it in 1 ohm unless you wan't to cook eggs on it.

About 3 years ago, SoundStream was bought out of financial trouble and their entire amplifier line was scratched and redesigned from the ground up.

In that time I have seen and heard of more "smokestream" amps being returned for service than just about any other brand on the market.

I have however seen a few of the amps take extreme abuse. So when you do get a good one, they are good. But when you get a lemon...goooood luck ever keeping it going.

Just stating what I've seen personally.

soundstream in my opinion was one of the best amp producers. there reference line up is unparallel. i dont know much about the rubicon stuff tho. my advice, dont buy it unless its really dam cheap and comes with a warranty.
