Re: Home Made Double Din
The ac controls had to be moved up approx. 3/8" to make room for the radio. The heater vents in the console had already been modified from a previous radio install, so i cant say if they would cause a problem.

I have the same exact head unit in my daily driver and love it. I really want to put the same one in my 87 camaro.
Wondering what you did to the heat vents prior to this. If they didn't get in the way for this head unit I might as well do what you did to them.
Also want to know where you got the texture piece and paint from.
Thanks!

Re: Home Made Double Din
There has been so much demand for a nice almost OEM looking double din solution. The DDz ones, from the pictures I've seen I wasn't all that impressed. Yours seems to be the best one I've seen.
Would it be possible for you to write a tutorial on how you did it? Steps involved, material list etc?
Or even better, are you willing to reproduce these for a cost?
Or even

The heat duct from the bottom of the dash needed to be removed (only 2 Screws) and the ducting on the inside of the floor console needed to be trimmed.

Re: Home Made Double Din
I originally purchased one from DD and was not impressed at all with the fit or finish. That is what made me build this. I thought about building them, but this was the first time I ever did anything like this and is was very time consuming. There was a lot of experimenting with different epoxy, fillers, texture coating and paints to get to this final result. I will try to put together a list of materials and how i did it.
I was going to buy one of the DD units, even started a group buy. Then I started to see more finished pieces and they really didn't look good at all from the ones I've seen. Yours looks almost OEM, and that is what I'm going for.

Re: Home Made Double Din
when you moved up the heater controls, did you raise the hole in the plate too?

Yes, if you just move the heater controls and don't raise the the hole in the plate you would see a gap where the plate doesn't cover the bottom of the HVAC, and you will cover the text at the top of the HVAC. You can see it a little in this picture. i know the HVAC is not level but you get the idea.

Re: Home Made Double Din
Here is basically what I did to build this:
1. I purchased this double DIN trim ring From Crutchfield.
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_0202DBK...nting-Kit.html
It came with the Sleeve and Trim Ring, you do not need the sleeve. I used this trim ring because it is thicker than most of the others that I found, and it fits better in the stock face plate opening after all the cutting.
2. Cut apart the factory radio bezel to make the trim ring fit. (See Picture)
The double din trim ring in the picture is NOT the one from crutchfield
3. Glue in the Double DIN bezel, and patch, sand and paint as needed.

Re: Home Made Double Din
As far as filling in gaps and smoothing things out, I tried Bondo and some other fillers with no luck and wound up using this.

I'm going to give it a try before Spring.
QQ: What did you use to cut the sections out? I was thinking a dremel, but wanted to see what you used.
