Your radio is not powerful enough. They are distorting due to poor signal, and lack of power to drive the components. Also make sure the polarity is correct.
Yes you can get some bass out of mids but if you are turning your sound up to get more bass you are just asking to much of them. To run lows and more bass you will need a sub.
Once you have a sub and amp, what you need to do is get a decent 4ch amp at around 50w x4 RMS. Not some cheapo amp because your signal will still reach its limit and it will also distort at some level of volume. Get a brand name and you will be happy.
Set your crossovers to block the low freq from reaching your speakers, and you will be set.

But if loud and clear is what you want, you will never get there with just a head unit powering a couple of speakers. You need a multi channel amp and subwoofers.
I have a 5 channel 1000 watt alpine amplifier. 4 channels power four of the speakers, (The rears are three way speakers) and the fifth channel drives the subwoofers in the trunk. I am a Metallica guy and that's more than enough for me.
You will need far more than that if you are into thug tunes and don't care about anything but shaking the neighborhood...lol

Well they are both pretty sub par as far as car audio performance goes. That does not mean you cant still have a kick *** system.
Like I said in my first post, your radio is not powering your speakers enough to provide clean sound so they distort. Don't worry though because that would be the case with almost any head unit. Some more expensive speakers handle distortion a lot better.
Get an amp if you want to pump up the volume. Set your crossovers to block lows and you will be good.
ALSO double check you have the + - hooked up correctly on the speakers. Reverse polatrity will distort speakers ALOT faster than anything else.

Make sure you don't have one speaker (or one set) hooked up reverse polarity (out of phase). You will have poor bass response and distortion at what appears to be low volume levels. The reason is that the bass is cancelling itself out. Each speaker might be making lots of noise, but it could be being cancelled by the other speaker.
The factory wired the front out of phase with the back. If you use harness adapters, the front will be out of phase with the back unless you reverse the wiring in the front.
Playing with the fader and balance controls can help you figure out if this is the problem. Start by fading to the back only and see if you have an improvement in bass. Then adjust balance from left to right to see if the bass picks up as you narrow the signal down to one speaker. It should always be loudest and have the most bass with all four speakers on, any decrease in bass or loudness as you bring more speakers in is a sure sign of a phasing problem.
