Speaker rms versus amp rms....

I am adding a pair of Boston SE65 Speakers to my car and will be also installing a Rockford Fosgate R400-4D amp. The speakers are rated at 35W RMS, and the amp is rated for 75W RMS per channel.

Will it be ok to hook the speakers up to this amp without destroying them since the amp rms is double the speakers rating? Or how should I install these? Should I wire both speakers to a single channel?

I am still debating on the amp, but more than likely will be getting this one locally new in the box for $100.

Re: Speaker rms versus amp rms....

But each channel is rated at 75w per channel, so wiring each speaker to their own individual channel, I would be overdriving them by 40 watts each...

You can over power them just turn down the gain so you don't blow the speaker what is the rms watts on amp and what are the rms on speaker not peak watss and is it a 4 channel amp

Re: Speaker rms versus amp rms....

You need to see the ohms of the speaker vs ohms on amp depending how you wire it the resistance will lower your rms too

Re: Speaker rms versus amp rms....

That's a lot of resistance 4 ohms o ohms is no resistance you would be fine with that amp

4 ohms is standard for car auto equipment, no worries there.

yes, you will be completely fine hooking up those speakers to the amp. just because the amp can put out more power than the speakers can technically handle, you're not going to be playing test tones at full tilt at all possible times.

better to have too much power on tap than not enough.

Keep the gain **** down about 1/2 way from full power and you will be ok bro. The amp does 75 watts RMS and with the 35 watts rms rating of the speakers you need to be careful.

MAX power ratings are a joke. Some speakers can go WELL over the 'max' power, and other's cannot take even close. RMS is the numbers to look at.

Unlike subwoofers, speakers RMS ratings are usually realistic.

Agreed keep the gain know done. but if you have a decent head unit you wont need a amp. 35 rms isn't much and most head units can handle this.
Also agree rms is the thing too look at. once bought a woofer with 1200 peak powered it with 1000w amp, this being back in the day before I knew anything, and it lasted for a little while. Turns out its rms was 300 and the amp was 500 rms, live and learn lol.

Anyway not sure if its too late but like i said you prolly don't even need an amp for that rms, look at the specs on your head unit.

Play with the gains on the amp until you're satisfied. More headroom is better.
