Just to add a little but certainlt not take away from what he said, Try to compare at the same volumes that you would ordinarily listen to plus a little softer and louder with several different stereos. Also the same type of music. The different stereos may create a better or worse sound. Also check settings on the stereos to be the same. Then within your price range you will know what you want. Most any will last but the quality of the sound from the speaker is what you are trying to determine. Keep in mind that if the speaker sounds bad with stereo A it could sound bad with yours. By checking against several stereos you can also determine some about the sound as to the quality of the stereo. I would assume that the store will not have your stereo model to use as a comparison.

As to what brand to look at everyone has their own opinion and their price range may not match yours or their sound preference may be different.

My preference has always been Rockford Fosgate, and Pioneer products.

Re: Descent Speakers

i'm a big fan of the "bang for buck" stereo stuff, so I'm always checking for new stuff at the diymobileaudio forums. I ran Crystal components in the past with good luck, liked the alpine/mach 5 kit i pieced together, and now look forward to trying out a set of cadence speakers i just picked up for short money. sooooo many brands out there these days that its hard to be limited to just what's in your local store.

ask around, listen to whatever you can, and just like anything car-related, don't get frustrated if you don't get the right combo the first time!

Re: Descent Speakers

JBL GTO speakers if you're on a budget would be my first choice followed by Pioneer (not from wal-mart).

Kenwood makes a good deck also

Have a look at www.woofersetc.com

Start small and build as you have the funds.

Re: Descent Speakers

Sony xplode products are crap. Don't waste your money if you are concerned about longevity. If you want your speakers to last more than 2 years, buy alpine, jl, or another reputable quality product.

With a four channel alpine amp, and an alpine headunit, I put these in the camaro, with one alpine subwoofer (powered by a jl amp).

JL AUDIO Evolution TR 400-CXi - Car speaker - 35 Watt - 2-way - coaxial - 4"

JL AUDIO TR690-TXI COAXIAL 3-WAY SPEAKERS 6"x 9"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00076FVL0

My subwoofer is a alpine type-s, 7 years old.
