1991 Z28... stock cassette player... audio limitations?
I'd like to put a stock cassette player from another '91 or '92 Camaro back in my Z28... my only dilema is that I want some decent sound quality, lots of trebble and bass. I am getting all new speakers, two 4" tweeters in the front and some higher end 6x9's in the back. My only question is, I'd like to run a 12" sub and a 650 watt amp... can I do that with the stock cassette player? How would it sound? I thought you needed an aftermarket deck for a sub output...

Very doable-stock thirdgen era delco cassette radios are
actually very good sounding units that only need amp
and speaker upgrades to really rock-the ones with the
blaupunkt cassette transport are one of the best car
cassette players ever made,at least as genuine german
blaupunkts and german becker waaay better than the
'90s pioneer i have in my dodge or any other
aftermarket cassettes i have had
I have had a modified,blaupunkt transport,'84 'vette
delco bose in mine for years and it is superlative.
(delco bose is preamp output and quite low voltage,
so takes amps with a lot of input gain to use to
maximum effect) To build a high performance audio
system using a stock,non-bose,originally amplified
delco i would try to "hack"the radio to bring out
a couple preamp outputs and use those to supply the
added-on amps, bypassing the built -in amps.
BTW i greatly improved the overall sound of my z28's
system by adding 6"woofers to the lower doors and
1"dome tweeters to the upper doors and not using the
factory dashtop 4x6 positions

Check out the JBL MS-8. It acts as an adapter for your stock system.
Basically, RCA's go from your stock unit into the MS-8. Then your aftermarket amps (ie sub and/or speaker amp) connect to the MS-8. You use the MS-8 and your stock HU to control the system.
