Alternator Question

Hello, i am about to purchase a new high output alternator, i would just like to know about how many amps i should be looking for?

I have a Optima Yellow top battery btw, and im running a 1000w rms amp for my 4x6's and 6x9's, and a 2000w rms to my sub. Thank you.

Re: Alternator Question

What brand and model number are the amps?

What size fuses do the amps have?

Are you planning on running a second battery? Isolator?

There are things to consider before just upgrading the alt.

Also for the current size alt, I wouldn't get it wound to more than 120 amps. You could swap an alt. from a late model caprice or caddy that is 140 amps (you would need the alt bracket as well).

Re: Alternator Question

They are a California 1000w 4-channel and a hifonics brutus 2000w 1-channel.

Im not sure of the amperage of the fuses, they came with the wiring kit i bought. im guessing 100?

Single battery is what id like to do, for weight reasons, and no, i dont know what an isolator is, so no i dont have one lol.

my stock alt puts out 60amps, so i know thats not enough, but i did find a Bosch 200w alternator online, would that be good to go with?

You could go with one battery but you might experience lights dimming (when the volume goes up) .

The Brutus amp requires a 160a fuse. I can't get any info on your Profile California amp.

In any event, if you want to run one battery then you can go with the 200amp alternator.

Make sure your wiring is big enough. I see the Brutus takes 0ga wiring.

I would also suggest doing the Big 3 (VERY GOOD IDEA)

I've been having good luck with mine rewound to 140 amp, nice step up up from the stock 105 amp. The place that did it for me also put on a slightly smaller pulley for better output at idle as well as for cooling. Also lifetime warranty. I also run a second battery through a diode isolator.

I agree on the above. I liked the cables from here so much, I bought a second set for our Blazer.

For the Big 3, I purchased pretty well everything on ebay for some very good prices. I use Stinger connectors when possible. I buy a lot from "bag-boy" on ebay. I've had very good luck with his service.

A few parts of my Big 3

Re: Alternator Question

Looks like nice stuff Project.

Here is what my cables look like.

Stock vs Innovative Wiring negative cable

The above are my Blazer cables. The GTA cables (pic below) are the same build and materials. Just a different amount of cables and lengths. Innovative includes a nice stainless steel bolt and nut to tighten down the battery posts.

The GTA runs better with a 105 amp alternator and these cables than it did with a 140 amp alternator and stock cables.

Re: Alternator Question

My 3.1 has had me worried. Smallest alternator I've ever worked with. I'm nut using much, just a PA2-1200 at 2ohms. CS-140/bluetop in the trunk/all kinds of ideas. But my amp isn't big. [smallest one I've had.]
