Static in the driver side dash.
Im using sony xplod 6.5 two way speakers in my dash and sony xplod 6.9s in the rear, my question is since i put these speakers in my 86 my driver side dash speaker is really staticy like its about to blow or has been blown but these speakers are brand new,, the connectors in the 86 for the stereo were cut so i used the connectors from my 90 for a fast install, i have gone over these connections again and again and im not finding anything... this speaker was working fine untill its changed a song on my ipod then i could barely hear it, also when i fade it to my right side speakers it cuts out completely.

Re: Static in the driver side dash.
Probably because they are Sony brand speakers. Sony speakers are pretty much junk.

Re: Static in the driver side dash.
You crimped - most speaker wires are pretty small guage wires - sometimes they don't get crimped very well since they are small. I'd try redoing the job - this time expose 1 inch of copper, and fold it over 2-3 times so there's a nice wad of copper getting pushed into the crimp connector.
The best method short of soldering is to skip the crimp connectors. Strip 1 inch off each wire, put shrink tubing over one wire. Lay the two ends together so that they overlap, and twist one around the other in one direction, and twist the other around the first in the other direction until you run out of copper, then slide the shrink tubing over the connection and shrink it. Short of soldering this is by far the strongest hold and most contact between the two wires. Most car stereo shops install using this method.

This is a given - there should be no sound on the left when the Balance controls are set to the right.

Re: Static in the driver side dash.
straying away from bashing, i would pull the dash cap off and try hooking up a known working speaker up (even something from home will be ok, just a bit quieter since home stuff is usually 8 ohm instead of 4). if its still making static, you've either got a bad connection somewhere or a bad deck. if it sounds like it should, you've got a bad speaker.
also is this only happening with your ipod or with radio as well?

Re: Static in the driver side dash.
Eh, do it right. Twist, solder, and either heat shrink or tape. If the radio wiring was hacked, you're going to want to do this anyways. That way, you'll KNOW if it's a bad connection or bad speaker. I'm redoing mine while the harnesses are out (going back with factory routing to reduce interference from the amp power wires when I go to install the second amp ).
