Can you use a jump drive on USB stereos?
The title kind of says it all. All the stereos that have USB ports say they will charge and play from an ipod, but can you play music off of a jump drive with these? Thanks in advance for any answers!

I bought a Dual head unit that has a usb port, and I store and play all my music on a 8gb flash drive. Makes it nice to not have to change cds while driving.

Yup, usually the head unit has controls for the usb - my wifes car has small wording above the radio presets for skipping/fast forwarding etc. Make sure the file structure makes sense though, flipping through it on a tiny screen is a PITA!
I actually thought this thread was about using a small external hard drive - wonder if that would work hehe! One of the smaller ones, that don't need the extra power supply to run.

If you own a Pioneer with an IP-Bus input in the back, you can get an adapter for about $30 that allows you to plug a USB device in. I just ordered one and an 8GB flash drive to listen in my car.
I was originally going to use my MP3 player and just hook it up via a audio patch cable, but from what Ive heard, you have to crank the player up, and you lose quality. This way, it should stay digital, and I dont have to worry about my player batteries dying or plugging in a cig adapter.
No fuss...no muss.
The only thing Ive heard is that the display on the Pioneer isnt very descriptive. You get like 8 non-scrolling characters. I cant confirm that...and my Pioneer is a higher end unit, so Im hoping its better on mine. We'll see.
Here's the unit: CD-UB100

mine can. in fact, if i wanted, i could plug in a 1tb external hardrive into the back. i LOVE usb. IMO, any radio that you buy from today on shold have a USB drive somewehere on it or it isnt worth having. you shouldnt have to buy an adapter to use it either. DIN-USB is a bad idea IMO

Absolutely, man. You'll find C.D's obsolete when you begin using USB flash drives. The only thing to look out for (as previously mentioned) is how you organize your files, because it's pretty difficult to sort through them on the USB.

i just put my zune hd into the aux jack. it sucks that almost all players are ipod ready....and im not buying an ipod just for it.
if i hook it up thru the usb port...it just doesnt work. it will charge it though.
i wonder if i would have better luck with a newer deck. mine is a pioneer that is around 2 years old. close to a 300 dollar player for 200 bucks. thanks walmart clearance!

I just bought this yesterday, Kenwood KIV-700, and you get audio and control of the Zune through the USB port.
You can actually hook up a USB hub and use 3 of the ports and have an Ipod, Zune, and USB Thumbdrive hooked up at once and select which one to use.
Should get it by this weekend and I'll test it with my Zune 30GB.
I have an iPod that I use as my main source.

To answer this and any others..
Yes an external works! I own the pioneer model (I forget...) That has the USB cord connected to the back and I have it custom made to extend to the center console. I put a peice of velcro on it to keeo in place and I'm good...
Just remember to organize your files and name them accordingly. For easy access and listing on the screen to scroll.
I have over 15,000 tracks on there and goin' strong!

thats what i did with mine.
although i just leave it on random and press next if i dont like a song at the moment.
if i could figure a way to guarantee that the heat wouldnt fry a hard drive, i'd buy one, stick it back there and forget about it.
