Radio won't play cassette? (UX1)

I have a Delco cassette radio (model UX1 with eq) and it will not play the cassette tapes in it. When you put the tape in, it will switch over to the other side of the tape but won't play either side. Then it will spit out the tape. Anybody have any ideas what is wrong or how to fix this?

probably just needs belts or other minor mechanical
repair.

Yep sounds like your belts are either broken, or so loose they are slipping. Which causes the tape mechanism to think you've reached the end of the tape.

Re: Radio won't play cassette? (UX1)

I had the same problem with mine. I took it apart to find that the belts were fine (they looked fairly new) but as it turned out the last shop to service it bent part of the cassette unit. I'm assuming this messed up the tension on the belts but I don't really know. I would try replacing the belts first. There is a link on here that I will send you if I can find it which shows how to do that. It's pretty easy but shops are going to charge you way too much.

What I ended up doing is taking the cassete deck part of another delco radio and swapping the whole unit into my radio. Mine came from an 87 Caddy but GM used the same tape decks in a bunch of different models.

Here it is. I started this thread several months back when I was having the same problem. The belt replacement link is in it but there might be some other useful info in the thread. Hope this helps.
