Whats the best speaker application for the sail panel?
Is a 6X9 or a 6" component system better for the sail panel area?

I never liked the sound a 6x9 gave. It was a design to try to get the most out of the size.
If you plan on upgrading to aftermarket especially with an amp and a sub, go with the component setup.
Metra makes a awesome 6x9 adapter plate that mounts right where the factory 6x9 mounts and allows for a 5 1/4" or 6 1/2" Speaker to mount in its place.

I have them in my car with Polk Momo 5 1/4" Speakers.
Much Much better...

I use abs plastic and I draw out the template and then cut it out. I have a set of 6.5 components and 3.5 concert tweets in the sails on mine and I have plenty of room for more. As long as you shim the plates to angle the speakers in your direction a little they will sound alot better.

In my first go round with these cars (84 Camaro), I kept it simple by just throwing in a 6x9, but there's a much better selection of 6 1/2" out there for less money. My second try (89 RS) I cut some MDF baffles in bolt them in place of the "enclosures" that were there. Spent half the money this time and much happier with the outcome.
