Head unit mounting

I was just wondering the best place to buy the mounting bracket to put in the dash for an aftermarket cd player. I have one in my 91 but I dont know where to get it.

Re: Head unit mounting

Got mine on ebay and works for both Camaro and Firebird

Item number: 330245149660

Schosche GM1500B

The nice thing about this is it's a flush kit and doesn't stick out like the kits you get at walmart

You will need to trim the rear mounting bracket in the radio pod housing, it's worth it because it makes a cleaner install.

I chose to use the supplied trim ring in the kit, or you can use the one that comes with the radio.

Re: Head unit mounting

Some radios require the kits that stick out a bit, gives people more options. Mine would not flush, the radio is to deep. BTW: Not all of them are cheap walmart. Metra sells a kit that extends it out. They have kits that extend out 1/4", 1/2", and even 1" out

Re: Head unit mounting

I just ordered this kit:

Metra 99-4000

I'm putting in a flip up DVD/Nav, and that little pocket will be perfect to put the MAP dvd in when I'm playing a CD or DVD. Plus it moves the radio higher up in the "pocket", instead of the middle of the kit.

Re: Head unit mounting

yeah most kits have adjustable depths (at least mine and a few friends did). What kept me from keeping it flush was the stereo, and it wasn't ducting, but metal bracing that blocked me from putting it back further.

Re: Head unit mounting

4 7mm bolts and that bracing comes right out. The depth restriction is from the duct that directs air to the vent on the consul (drivers side I think). I've heard some people trim the ducting. But I don't see a point of blowing air/heat so it would just flow out the trimed duct inside the consul.

Re: Head unit mounting

yeah I don't get the cutting into air ducts. Seems to defeat the purpose of them to me.
Another thing I've heard is use a heatgun and bend them (plastic ducts).
I dunno though, because you could still melt it shut.

I would love to have that IROC-Z radio bezel, but for $70 I'll pass.

Re: Head unit mounting

I have mine flush mounted and it can go further out but I made room for it to fit all the way in. While I was in there I made a security strap to attach the head unit to the chassis to stop anyone from stealing it.

I just did this the other day with mine... there is a plastic bracket (I think for the factory head unit) that I trimmed off, then just heated the plastic on the driver side air duct and pushed it in to get a little extra room on that side.
My head unit used to sit about an inch out and now it sits flush with the mounting bracket. Longest part of the whole process is taking all the bolts out of the console so it will shift back enough to get the piece the stereo sits in out.

Re: Head unit mounting

Sorry, but just pointing out the obvious (that you frequently miss). Link still works for me on my home and 3 work computers.

Link also works on my Blackberry.

www.HUmount.com is the homepage, the link I posted is directly to the camaro/firebird page.
