Is it possible to wire an AUX input to a FACTORY '93-94 CD Player for use with an iPOD?

I know about the FM transmitters and the cassette tape adapters. This being a CD player I can't use the tape adapter and would rather not use the FM TXmitter if possible.

Just wanted to get some of your opinions.

if you hvae amps, then you could just do what i did and connect your ipod to the amps via headphone out to rca in cables. i used 2 of those and used a headphone splitter in place of a head uniot due to the fact that i am 17 and hvae no money at the moment, lol

it works pretty good. but then i have no radio now either, lol

um, idk if this helps, but they do make a fm tuner for the ipod. i use it in my car. its something like 30 bucks i think. might be easier buying that.

 

I did it with my stock Delco Auto-Reverse tape deck, but with the CD player the proceedure would be different. I'll include the info I know about the tape decks, perhaps it'll help you formulate a plan of attack with your CD player.

On the delco tape decks, there are 5 wires going from the tape mechanism to the main board, the colors are Orange, White, Red/White, Brown, and Red.

Orange and white are right audio and left audio respectively. Red/White is Radio power, Red is tape motor power and Tape/Aux power is brown.

To add an audio in jack, you solder a headphone jack onto the orange and white wires, then run the ground lead to the chassis of the stereo. you can insert a blank tape into the deck and it will let you test the jack, you should be able to hear audio from your portable music player instead of the tape or radio.

your next step will be to add a switch to turn off both the Red and Red/White wires. I simply used a toggle switch, but there is a special headphone jack available that will also act as a switch when the plug for your player is inserted, if you prefer a cleaner look.

if you notice a loud pop from your speakers when you pause or skip forward, add a 100mf capacitor inline from your new auxillary jack's Left and Right input wires (one on each wire except ground), and that will fix the problem.

Ive never tried modifying the delco CD player, hopfully it's not much more difficult than the steps for the tape player. good luck with your project.

 

88KARRV6, your on the right track, but there is a MUCH better way to do it! I have the secret! I'm pretty sure it could also work on a CD radio. If you guys could post some pics of the radio with the top removed, I might be able to tell if it'll work. I'm pretty sure it works on a tape style up to '99. The ones that look like a um6, but the tape goes in the other way. And I know it works up to '89.

The way I do it, it has no switchs or adapters. Just like the one in the pictures except the plug is on a cord instead of in the face of the radio.
Plug 'n' play after its installed.

Ok, so where does your system plug the ipod into? I don't have any pics of the radio with the top removed but here's one of the face so you can get an idea of which one I am working with.
Any help is appreciated, I'd like to be able to do this if practiacal.

I'll bet that stereo WILL work. It looks the same on the outside as a um6, as far as the *****, and I'll bet the amp is right behind them.
The ipod plugs into a female stereo headphone jack, you'll need a 5 dollar 1 ft male to male headphone cord from radio shack to plug the ipod into the stereo. There is a photo of it in the "where do i put my ipod" thread.

hey my last headunit had an AUX input where i could use my mp3 player with it (red and white ends into the aux input and the a headphone jack on the other side) that headunit had a bunch of problems so i bought another one off a guy for pretty cheap, but it doesnt have the AUX input so i cant use my mp3 player.. and the fm transmitter i have dosnt work very very because of my eception.. but what im asking is.. is there a way to add the aux input or something? i have input for a cd changer.. is there anythign i could add to get it?

Hey, no problems! From what I have researched so far, if you have a newer radio with an CD changer input then you can get an adapter that will plug the mp3 player into the CDC port since that is basically an AUX port. I'll try to find that link for you.

BTW mickstan has the right idea here, currently working on finding out whether it will work on my CD player. I'll update the thread once we get that figured out. But his system is the best I've seen for a tape deck!

I went to the local pick-n-pull the other day, and "gently" openend up several radios. Saturns and other GMs up to about '03. The radios all look basicaly the same. There is a ribbon cable is common in all of them. Thats where the cord hooks into. This mod COULD work in a LOT of radios. But right now, I don't have the ability to test them all!
As far as aftermarket stereos....I have no idea at all if it would work.

 

Im a big audiophile and hooking up an MP3 player to a newer headunit is a cake walk.

You need a stereo cable with a 3.5 connection (they are like 4 bucks at radioshack) plug the red and white to the back of the unit then plug the 3.5 end into your player and there you're done. If you have a tape player just get a tape adapter for like 10 bucks.

I suggest getting a stand alone headphone amp for the best sound quality and Rockboxing your Ipod and heading over to http://www.head-fi.org/

 

Pardon my french, but tape adapters suck. And so do transmitters.

 

Here's what I did. Its extremely clean and when iPod isn't in, looks like any other cd deck (slight theft deterrant?).

1) I bought the cheapest cd player that has an external audio jack in the back of it.
2) The ashtray (or whatever went under that little lid in front of the shifter) was missing when I bought the car, but I would have removed whatever went in there anyways.
3) I then bought a universal iPod dock.
4) I made a bracket out of aluminum (cut from an old pc case I had lying around) I don't have a pic of it because its inside the center console and I really dont want to take everything apart to get to it.
5) I used double-sided tape to attatch the iPod dock to the bracket, then bolted the bracket w/ dock to the sides of the center console so the dock is accessible when that little lid is flipped up. This required a lot of modification to the underside of the center console because I wanted the iPod to be high enough to use its buttons. I also had to round of the back of the dock because it sits so close to the lid.
6) The cd player had an audio jack in the back, so i went from the audio output on the iPod dock to the audio input in the cd player.

You might notice that the ashtray lid has a line cut out of it. I had to do this because the lid doesnt just flip up, it rotates so that the back of it recedes back below the level of the center console. The cable going from the dock to the cd deck stuck out behind the dock, and didnt allow the lid to be flipped all the way back, so I made a hole in the lid where the audio cable is.

Overall, its very clean (no visible wires anywhere), its very low profile, and if I wanted to, I could hook the dock up to the cigarette lighter somehow and have it charge my iPod as well. It was a bit of work (especially when all I had were hand tools and a wimpy dremel), but I really like the outcome. Its great to be able to just flip a lid and plug in any iPod i want (my girlfriend always brings hers along cuz she hates all my music). You could even buy the universal dock that has the IR thing so you can use a remote to control the iPod, although you would have to have the IR reciever unconcealed which means it wouldnt be able to go in the center console.

Well, now I'm rambling so I hope this gives you some good ideas.

 

Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the CDC port? I think this is as easy as adding the "play" button power out (Tape/play button) on 95 and newer decks and adding the right & left line in and ground.....
Pressing the play button would change input from radio or tape to Cd in this case line in or so I believe.

No thanks, if I was going to spend $250 plus shipping, I would upgrade to an aftermarket deck with many more and newer features beyond line in, like MP3 disc compatibility and text Song name) & video display.

There is even cheaper versions on ebay only $138 with a better EQ 7 ban vs. 5 band.
