Sealed Woofer Box Question

Is it required to use fiberglass insulation or Dacron fiberfill inside of a sealed subwoofer box? I read that it should be filled to 50% to 75% capacity to increase sound damping and woofer performace. Is this necessary? Badman

if i rember the only thing that stuffing the box dose is make the sub think its in a bigger box, and you will only need to do that if the box you have is to small for the sub. what kind of sutup are u runing?

I have 2 FUBAR 12w dvc sub woofers. I ordered a ready made box to fit the Camaro. Just was not sure if I was supposed to put baffle material in with the subs. According to their directions they say to use it. However I hear it's not necessary. Soooo, yes or no? The links Bill/T/D/Y say some do, some donot.I'm a newbie to audio system setup, so I just need a yes or no. Thanks for the replys. Badman P.S. See photo for box.

if you can get a hold of some 1" thick foam like out of a chair and cut to fit and glue inside the box to get into the corners real well it will make the box come alive. What it does is kill the harmonics inside the box which improves the sound quality, not so much the quantity..

Badman, Ive got a bow just like that, just make sure that each side is sealed, check all the mating areas, mine was a shitty job, and I redid the caulking, it made a huge difference.....Dont really think you have to have the fiber fill, if the box is pretty close to the size the speakers want, Good luck, Tom

My opinion is to put poly fill in the box. I can tell the difference in the sound.

Gallileo60, where did you purchase your box? I have not recieved mine yet. Got mine from ADD through Top Edge Audio online. As for the polyfill, seems reading posts and searching and reading links leans toward the use of it. Thanks for all the info, as I am still learning. Badman

Depends on your box size. Your subs are for a 1 cu. ft sealed box. I used to have a pair but fried them. Depending on your box size poly- is the box is a little small but doubt it 1 cu. ft is a pretty normal size.
If your box is to big then add some wood chunks and screw them to the box to make your box smaller.
If you have the right box size to start with then polyfill is not needed at all?

What size is your box?????

From what I've read it all comes down to personal preferance.I'm a newbie ta bass too so I research my butt off.And since I built the same basic box usein the measurements from this forum.I have no qualms with openin it up and tryin fill and other mods like ports ect.I have recently added some pink fiberglass house insulation to the bottom of my box.Non ported with 1 12" infinity in it and it seems to sound more defined when the cannons go off in for those about to rock.
So from what I understand it all comes down to yer own ears.Try it and see if ya don like it then take it out or if ya can't tell a diff then just leave it in there no harm done.Like all music and art there is no real WRONG WAY to do it.It's all in the ears or eyes of the beholder.

It's cheap and easy, so try it. If you don't like it, pull it out. Any changes at all will be subtle, and will be related only to the new effective box size thanks to the polyfill "fooling" the sub into thinking it's in a slightly larger box.

Polyfill or foam along the enclosure walls will do nothing for harmonics in a subwoofer enclosure. Properly built enclosures don't excite major harmonics, they simply reflect sound at a frequency consistant with it's internal dimensions, causing constructive and/or destructive interference with the driver's output at those frequencies. Unless your sub is a total piece of ****, there should be no sounds at higher frequencies where this would occur. Also, the foam along the walls of the enclosure will not damp lower frequencies whatsoever. Most foam won't even damp midrange. I've done some testing with various cheap foam products, and so far all I've found that's audibly effective in the midrange frequencies is the 1/2" thick carpet padding that's available at Home Depot and other places that sell carpet. Egg crate foam, and any of the foams from Jo Ann Fabric that I've tried are useless except at higher frequencies that are not found inside of an enclosure anyway. Commercially available products like Whisper Mat or Black Hole are effective in midrange frequencies, but are expensive.

Hi Badman, yes they are probably correct on the fiber fill...I cant tell that much difference, but it seems others can...Got the box at a Stereo Shop in Houston, dont remember the name..It was not very expensive, but as I said, mine was NOT well sealed....Tom

Same here bad.Have ya checked out the thred on building same box?Be cheaper and the demensions are reeeaalllll close to glove tight. Also ya can do like i just did and hit the bone yards try ta find the sub/mid box that came stock in some c-ros , birds and T.A's.It's deep (down into area b4 rear wheel wells)and is in the same area as the 6x9 holes.I plan ta pick up either some 4.5's and use the 4x6's with some passive 40 watt x-overs(another yard find)or make a plate to use the 4's i have now with same x's.They actually had some decent sound. My plan is to use relays ect to make a dual system.1 for good sound when have passengers and 1 for when wanna make ears ring goin ta work.

oh hey bad..Another + to buildin yer own is ya have an easier time recoverin it.I used red/burgandy felt from wally world and it matchs almost the old dirty carpet in my 90.Looks nicer than the blk/grey stuff on storebought.+ the pride factor never hurts when the bassheads say damn sounds/looks sharp.
