Radio Kits
I currently have the original stereo on my 91 Firebird. I have just bought a Pioneer DEH-1800 CD radio and need to know what "kit" I need to buy to fit it.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks in advance

by "kit" do you mean an adapter of sorts...If so, then at wal-mart for like $10 you can buy an adapter plate to make the new stereo fit. and for about $7 you can get a harness adapter so you don't have to cut up your stock harness.

Anyplace that sells the installation kits will have a chart or book to go by that tells you which kit to purchase.

Or you can make your own if you want to take the time to make your radio look like it actually belongs there.
Building the piece to hold the radio itself is easy. A piece of plywood will do just fine. You can use screws that go right through the stock mounting points into the wood adapter to hold it BEHIND those mounts. You can use washers to adjust how far back it goes.
Then you build a trim piece out of thin ABS plastic by tracing the exact shape of the faceplate onto it, and cutting it out. I usually cut small and file my way to a perfect fit. Once that's done, you can glue the faceplate onto your stock trim piece in the proper position.
I don't have pics of my old firebird install, but it was very similar. The one issue to be aware of with firebirds is that to push the radio that far back, you'll have to do some modifications to the plastic brace at the back of the console, and may need to "clearance" the trans tunnel a tad.

jim85iroc, what did you use to create the mounting locations for the LCD screen and DVD player? You're right, it does look like it's supposed to be there.
