made new subwell box for my sub. Oops..

Im sure you all have heard that old saying, "Measure twice, cut once?" well I kinda fudged up along those lines today....

I mad a new box for my sub following the plans posted by the subenclosures.com guy. woo hoo! it works, but my sub dosent seem to like it. Couldnt figure out what I had done. total box is 2.075 CU according to the designer, and right here is my piece that is labled divider that I would use to cut the box into two seperate boxes. Oh Sh!XX!! this thing should be IN the box! it is all sealed up nice and tight, ALL edges are glued up with liquid nails, but I forgot to put in the damn divider! so It is ging to have to come back out on the weekend. Im going to try to just cut the seam on the bottom piece and drop it off so I can put in the divider. god I hope this works. my 10" Type R dosent like all that space for a sealed box, and I dont really want to port it. Heck ported is supposed to be 1.5 cu max anyway....

The divider helps strengthen the MDF due to the long span. That's really about the only purpose it serves. Having 2 subs in that enclosure with or without the divider won't change the sound. 90% of the sub installs out there run the subs in mono anyway, and even if you do run them in stereo, virtually all recordings (jazz and classical not withstanding) record the bass track in mono anyway.

yea, but Im running ONE sub. a single Type R 10". Sealed reccomended space is .5 - 1 CU, and ported ot 1 - 1.5Cu. it is right now sealed in a 2.075CU. see my issue?

The problem is that you built the box twice as big as you needed, not that you forgot the divider.

What the hell are you going to do with the other half of the box? Line it with plastic and fill it with ice & beer?

Hopefully soon Ill be getting a coupld new subs, but untill then I diddnt want just half a box. for me it made more sence to just make a box that covered the whole well. I was thinking about making a box that wa shorter and fit lower in the well, but diddnt want to risk having something falling down on my sub. Oh well. I just got a new Sawzall and guess this wil be a good time to try it out.

as to porting it.... I had it ported in a 1.5 cu box tuned to 33 HZ in my eclipse. Sounded good. No it sounded great. then I totalled the car and bought a Stealth. Diddnt have room in the trunk to make a box that size and keep it looking good so I tryed a sealed box at .8 cu and it sounded SO much better. it wa definately louder ported but it sounded a lot tighter sealed.

I might try building a port and putting it on,but I really liked it sealed better. depends on how the sawzall works I guess.

as as far as the Ice and Beer thought, I have a strange feeling that the bass would shake up the beer just a bit. And I am more a tequila guy anyway.

I saw the title, and was hoping you built one that fits in the side spare tire storage area.

If you have the means, get/borrow a router, and cut a slit in the bottom, just a tad wider than the dvider, and slide it in that way, rather than cutting the box in half. Coat it with liquid nails, cut a new divider, to make up for the wall thickness of the bottom, then use the sub openings, to reach in, and caulk the seams on the inside. Liquid Nails, silicone, whatever is your choice.

Stephen that is what I wanted to do,but that wont work for this box. it is 8 inches wide at the bottom (where you suggest cutting the slit) and 11.5 inches at the top.

I ended up taking a sawzall and cutting the bottom off fairly flush and putting in my baffle and then using liquid nails to re-attach the bottom.

with all teh space in the box unbaffeled the sub had to much air to play with, and I diddnt like the "Boomyness" you are talking about. now that is has the baffle and is right about .8-1.0 CU it sounds great again.

i should be getting my carpet for the box and my amp covers next weekend and Ill post a pic once I do.

Maybe I'll tackle that some day. I have the means, the desire, just not the UMPH to actually follow through and do it!
