Amp overheats after 30 minutes
I have a little Alpine sub amp in the rear hatch on the flat shelf by the spare tire, and it is covered by the cargo/ bose hatch. After running for a while it gets hot and shuts down, cools off and comes back on. Is there not enough air moving? Could it be from a power wire that used to run a bazooka built in (tiny) amplifer? There is no cooling fan and it is 150X1. Can I add a fan or should I move it? Are there any other things that could cause it?

it depends on what your using the amp for. are you using it for subs? what kind, and what wattage? if your subs are too big for the amp to handle, it will over heat. best bet is to get a bigger amp.

Don't know about you, but I’d rather not buy a new amp if that’s not the problem.
How many subs? How many voice coils? What is the voice coil resistance? Is the amp bridge? In to what load? Did you measure the resistance of the sub at the amp? What gage is the power wire? What’s the model# of the amp?

one bazooka 8 inch (tube)
voice coils not sure probably one
2 ohm sub
amp bridged 100w into 4 ohms right now
at 2 ohm it is 50w per channel
power wire is 12 gauge around insulation
Alpine MRH-T305
Am I right in thinking that I am putting too much load on this amp?
Should I wire it on one channel?

So you've got a 8 inch bazooka tube with the built in amp and you've got a sub with one 2 ohm voice coil running off the Alpine amp? How do you have the amp seeing a 4 ohm load if it's a single 2 ohm sub?

whoops, big ommission on my part!
the built in amp fried so I took it out and purchased this little amp to drive the speaker, the factory bazooka amps are tiny and expensive
where do I test the load it is seeing? I am pretty ignorant when it comes to amps, this is my first one...

You need a DMM and read the resistance of the speaker when disconnected from the amp. Right across the 2 speaker leads. If the first amp cooked it's vary possible the speaker is damage and that is the root of the problem now.

Yeah we need an ohm reading. If its 2 ohm at the end connections, and you are bridging it, you are running the amp at 1 ohm (or 2ohm mono bridged). Which on any alpine as far as i can remember is too much.

It would also be nice if you look inside to see if it is a single voice coil or dual voice coil sub. See if the speaker has two points to connect wires or four points to connect wires to.

the sub is 2 ohm for sure
single coil
I just hooked it up on one channel now
will the load be 2 ohms now?
(the original amp fried from getting wet when weatherstrip from the hatch was bad and it rained)
