honestly real world I have no idea what woudl happen haven't tried it. would like to but haven't yet. in theory I have an idea though.

Indeed. What I was trying to say in that specific example is that while a square wave will generate a lot of heat, you don't have a problem until the voice coil has too much heat to dissipate.

Also, I kind of went backward with what I was trying to say earlier when I mentioned the VC had time to cool down between clipped peaks. It's not the duration below rail which is so important (& I only refer to rail voltage because it makes the explanation easier to type), but rather the length of sustained time spent clipped. I've seen professionally recorded & mastered records from major labels and they do employ normalizing above 100% sometimes, but it is infrequent enough not to cuae a problem.

I'll check out those links when I get home. I'm on lunch break now. Looks interesting...
