Wow... Best Buy finally called me and told me that repairing the unit would cost MUCH more than the value of it. She told me the short list was that it needed a new mainboard, drive unit, tuner, and amplifier...

That astonishes me, because as far as I knew, all I had a problem with was the friggin grease, and the RCA fuse.

They are giving me store credit, which I will either hold onto until I believe they have a deck worth buying, or I will "sell" the credit to friends/family.

It doesn't need all that, the tech is just washing his hands. If you hold on to that credit make certain it doesn't lower over time or expire, that stuff has gotten me.

I'll hold onto it as long as I need to... I may do like I said, and trade it for real money from other people... then order a beast of a headunit off of crutchfield.

The only problem I forsee, is that with my luck, the deck will up and die, (no matter what deck,) and I will be SOL. Hence why I must have the 4-Year Replacement Plan. So I may just hold onto my credit for a little while.

Does anyone know of a headunit that's actually BETTER than the 8600?

I was looking at the Kenwood MP928... and the Kenwood XXV-01D

it seems that nothing has that microphone ability, nor the 13-band eq anymore... not even the new pioneers...

I do like that you can adjust the "4-band" eq for front and rear separately, and the crossovers have more selections, except they lack the 6db option that I never found myself using, they just have 12 and 18.

They both have time alignment, but you have to program it manually.

Basically, do the new high-end decks with "4 band eqs," sound just as good as the 8600? You can choose the "center frequency" for each band--which reminds me of some old crappy sony deck. I want full control.

any other decks from any store/manufacturer? I think I will just get a deck somewhere else, but man, I love that 4-year replacement plan.

also, I MAY be able to make bestbuy get me another 8600--the lady told me that they can do that sometimes, even though they don't actually carry it in-store anymore.
