6x9 distortion

Ok, I have a slight issue. I recently bought a new Sony CD player and four pioneer speakers, 2 4x6 and 2 6x9. I also bought capacitors for the 4x6s which I ended up removing because of the lack of midrange, it sounded way too hollow. The issue I am having is this. On songs with any type of heavy bass (rap, techno, etc) each time the bass hits I get distortion from my 6x9s unless I turn the bass COMPLETELY off. This of course is not what I want. I don't get any distortion from the 4x6s, I'm wondering if it's a design issue with the sail panel interior or something. Soon I'm going to be putting some subs in the hatch, so I'll solve the bottom end issue, but I do not remember having this issue with a new Infinity setup I bought back in 1997 (with a Pioneer head unit) in my old 89 GTA. I never got any distortion from those 6x9s in that car.

I'm not exact on the model of speakers or headunit. The speakers were ~$100 per pair and the headunit was about 150. The stuff sounded fine in the store, and for my budget was the best sounding speaker.

What kind of cross-over does your headunit have?

If it has no cross-over (which I'd almost bet every cent I have on it not having one,) then it's playing frequencies lower than 80hz through the 6x9s, because the 6x9s probably have a cheap cross-over, or no cross-over built-in. Those lower frequencies require a significant amount of power to reproduce... which is too much for that 15wrms X 4 internal amp of that sony headunit.

Either buy a good cross-over, or an external amplifier that can power the speaker without distorting...

Do not continue to play the distortion... seeing how that can damage the speakers...

good day.

You may also be hearing the rubber flaps in the door vent vibrating. They're annoying little things.

I just pulled mine out completely...

it would be cool to put some plastic trim around them so they look like a ports or something!
