Lightning Audio Sub

I'm almost positive that this isn't anything special, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Last year, my younger brother bought me a Lightning Audio 12' sub at Best Buy. (He's awsome like that.) He said he got it at half price.

I really have a gut feeling this sub is a piece of crap. I have a Pioneer deck in my GTA as well as aftermarket speakers. (The PO installed them, so I have no clue what they are.) The system doesn't sound bad at all. Then again, I'm used to the crappy radio in my other car, so anything sounds good to me.

So, any thoughts on my sub? Good match for my system? Or should I just buy a new sub or 2.

Any reccomendations on an amp? I'm looking for quality of sound, I don't need to go deaf.

Thanks,
Bill

My friend has a 10" LA sub in a small box in his trunk area. I wouldn't use it for any high quality system, but for an otherwise stock stereo, it adds much needed bass that neither the 6x9s or the 4x6s can produce.

At $50 for both the box and the sub, it won't break the bank either. You'll need an amp, though.

ya you deff. need an amp. The 20 watts the head unit is producing is deff not enough. Plus you could use a low pass filter and all the good functions an amp has.

i setup a friends truck with two of those that she got off of someone in trade for something else...

it was quite awhile back (year and a half or so) and i've done many a stereo since then, but I remember laughing at the things the whole time I was putting them in... from the chrome finish to the no name brand to the bright yellow color...

when it was all said and done i wasn't laughing anymore, those things were sounding pretty decent (in a sealed box though, I swear by sealed boxes)

once you turned it up they would hit pretty good too, but would distort easily at high volumes.

she cranked that stereo up and blew one in about 3 months, and the other went a month later... she was the type to have her entire EQ all the way up and her head unit all the way up too though, didn't even understand the word "distortion" and just could NOT grasp what I was trying to explain when I told her that past a certain point she wasn't getting louder, just sloppier, lol.

if you keep your stereo relatively low then you should have no problems with it, keep it hidden from any stereo guys though, they'll poke fun hahaha.

ya but as said. they can fill in some much needed bass for cheap. Just dont crank it...My first set of subs were Lightning audio and I beat on em pretty hard. They lasted quite a while. Until the car got stolen. anyway. next I had 2 sony explodes in my thirdgen. powered by the "1000 watt sony amp" LOL I also beat on those pretty bad and theyre still being used in a friends thirdgen. Anyway now I own yet another cutlass and upgraded to Phoenix gold. I know more about setting the gain/bass etc lower. Still sound fantastic. 2 tantrum TX-10s with a 600.1

Getting back to your original point.

LA is alright if your not looking for much out of them. Ive honestly never seen a sub blow though from just beating on it yet. Maybe full gain full bass full volume for full lengths of time would do it though...

i blew the sh*t outta a $30 "500watt" sony xplode sub. wal-mart said on the box it could handle 500 watts. so i hooked it up to my old jl audio 500.1 amp. it worked! it handled 500watts.

for about 30 seconds before it blew. itwas kinda funny tho just to do.

ok...rockford owns lightning audio, the lower end lightning audio sucks (the bolt and fast & furious edition)<---basically the yellow and red stuff) now the other series (strike, storm, etc.) are prett danm good from what i've heard.....both amps, and subs are solid......
