I've seen some on ebay... man I really want one of these! I want to replace one of my shocks on my hatch and control it with my 2-way alarm!
the best place to look is for marine applications... these things are mainly used to raise/lower outboard motors on boats... that's where I've seen the majority of them... usually about $150 or so...

are you planning on doing the same thing as me? With the hatch? or is this for the hood, or doors or something else?
I also looked into getting replacment minivan rear lift setups... but they are almost $600 to get! maybe now they are coming down in price... and the day you can get one at AutoZone, maybe I'll just drop some money on it...
the hardest part is wiring up the resistance setup so the actuator knows when to stop moving... and I would think you would just get rid of the whole automatic hatch pull-down assembly, and just use the actuator itself.

www.selectproducts.com carries actuators, but if they are like the rest of the stuff they carry, they are quite expensive.
I would do some google searches to see what you turn up. I'm sure there are plenty of supply outlets that have them for various industrial tasks.

I've even seem some before that the motor is built into the shaft... so you don't see a large motor housing off to the side...

basically replacements for the stock hatch struts... I think they are like 20"/28" extended...
all that matters really is that it has 8-12" travel range... you can always extend the base.
I guess it has to be able to hold about 75lbs
