Delco CD players gone wild!!!

I have the original Delco CD unit in my car and a few years ago the CD player stopped playing discs, it just clicks and sputters (the AM/FM works fine though). I've seen a couple of places that do repairs on GM Delco's and was wondering if it would be a waste of money? There's a guy on eBay that charges $100 to repair one (w/1yr warranty).

Are the CD sections on these early '90s Delco AM/FM/CD units problematic, or is mine just a dud? BTW, model # is 16136182

If you want to keep a factory deck in there, you should be able to buy a used one off ebay and have it work just fine. The price of reparing your deck may be more than buying a used one.

Never never never ever buy Sony. It's never worth the money, even at $100.00.
About the reliability of you stock HU. If it's original to your 91 and died a couple for years ago, it sounds like it lasted 10 years. That's VARY good for any CD player. It's worth getting it fixed if you just have to keep your car stock. Some people are into that.
But keep in mind that for not much more money you could have better then stock, much better. Lets face it, stock for our cars s*cked bad.

As I'm kinda fussy about my car being original, I decided to send the unit off to have it repaired. As my car is 99.999999999% original , it would bug me not to have the factory unit working properly.

But, at some point I'm going to install one of those Pioneer 1 1/2 din units and store the factory unit away as not to wear it out. That way if I ever sell the car, I can just put the original unit back in. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well since you can't buy a new Factory thirdgen CD deck. But if you could I was quoted 800 dollars canadian.. I had the Factory deck for mine repaired (400 canadian). it's like new now.. though.. it's fussy on what recorded cd's it'll play.,. minor draw back for the factory look. I'm not really into car stereos anyways.. a friend of mine has one of those XM Sat. radios.. with a FM trasmitter in it.. works awesome.. Almost thinking of it for mine.. that way I can minimise the use of the CD deck.

Bummer; by the title of this message, I thought this was an ad for a video tape of Delco CD players on the beach at spring break, flashing their displays at the camera ...

"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Sounds like that video would sell well.

I never really understood why some people were so concerned about the stock look when it clearly compromises so much sound quality and so many features... but I guess that's one thing I'll just never know... have any of you guys considered buying a NEW deck that just fits perfectly in the radio pod area? most people would NEVER know what deck came in the car--so maybe you could even buy a new delco radio and put it in... like from a monsoon system or whatever you want... it would look fairly stock.

Be easy on me ScrapMaker, I'm still smartin' from having just replaced my original factory power antenna with a...gulp...aftermarket stationary mount.

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading to another system once I get the Delco back and make sure it works ok. Maybe I'll give one of those Pioneer GM/Chrysler size units a try. I wouldn't rule out one of the Monsoon systems, but I don't know if they're compatible with my existing wiring/connections etc. I'm not much for too many doo-dads on my stereo system, heck, I remember years ago when my old GM 8-track player just had a vol, tone and channel selector, and I never lacked for being entertained!

I wonder if you'd have to have some sort of spring mechanism that pushed down on the needle so it wouldn't skip around? I know those weren't very common.

They weren't vary common because they destroyed the records over time. If you ever looking at a turn table run from these things.

I have a stock Delco CD deck that also works fine, but will not play (or eject if I remember right) and disks. They are VERY expensive on ebay! (Usually $100+... that's a lot for a 10 year old stock H/U)

Did they happen to tell you what was wrong? Where did you send it? What was the total to fix it?

I don't know what it is, but there is just something about the stock CD decks that makes me feel warm inside

Oh, and BTW, ALL Sony car audio stuff sucks. Not just saying that to ruffle feathers, but from experience, reccomendations, and other thirdgen.org people!

I wasn't told what the probem was, but I think it's a common problem with many of the early Delco CD units. Maybe a sensor switch or something?? This guy charges $100 plus $15 shipping (1 year warranty on the repair). He's out of Chesapeake VA (Norfolk area?) and his business is called Same Day Auto Audio Repair (757-420-5206). I found him on eBay (ebay name: rch72@aol.com) where he lists his service for this type of repair. I shipped my unit on a Friday and had it back the next Friday. It's working great for several weeks now without any problems. There's a place in Florida that charges $190 for the same repair, so this guy is pretty reasonable for $100.

Delco Cd players

i envy all that own a factory gm cd player. mine came with the crappy tape player. over time the bass adjuster stoped takin input, and was either full or no bass and only played the left channel when listening to tapes. I have been looking high n low for thos cd players, or tape players with the graphic equalizer but never found one yet. what i wanna kno is how rare thos things are to find, and if an adaptor would b needed for my existing wiring harness.

Wow,

I just got one not that long ago. However when I plugged it in, it sparked a little bit and started smoking.

Anybody have any clue what happened? I put all the right plugs in the right places, My car is a 1990 and the player came from a 1991, could that be a possible problem? I think this lady ripped me off

Does the factory CD Player have a location for fuses? My g/f's 300zx did, do the Delco ones?

And also Trans It, I searched for that guy that repairs them for $100, but couldn't find him. Do you have a link to his feedback or anything?

Thanks alot!

it smoked... man thats strange... There was no difference between those two years. So it should have worked fine. The Factory CD Deck uses the same fuse as the Tape Deck in the fuse panel.. Thats it.. My Factory CD Deck is actually from a 1994 Olds. Looks the same.. Same wiring too..

I ripped it apart last night and couldn't find one single thing that was fried or burnt.

This lady is pissing me off with this. She hasn't even e-mailed me back. I either demanded she pay for the repairs or give me a refund and she's being flaky.

I love eBay, but some people just ruin the whole damn thing for me. I am clueless to electrical wiring so not only did I spend $180 on this CD player, I can't even use it.

Yes, but unlike all the other fools who like the stock look on their cars, I got hosed, by a mean eBay lady.

Big time.

Yeah that's my next step. I will not rest until I have a working Delco CD Player in my posession or $180.

And no i didn't buy the insurance. Pshh I almost killed myself because it took a month to get here and i figured if it got lost in the mail, didnt buy insurance, i would be screwed.

But luckily it came and im still on a quest.

not shipping insurance.... the paypal/ebay insurance... it protects against DOA and they even offer like 2 year warranties and such... it just farms out the insurance to another company... really cheap and worth it if you get something expensive or rare.

do you have a phone number for this lady? if you get a message machine, just leave a message that says you are interested in buying something from her... if she has another auction this would be easy... don't use your real name, then when she returns your call, you'll have an active #, plus you can confront her directly.

negative feedback can tear someone's reputation apart
I'd follow her every auction, and email the highest bidder and tell them what that bitch did... dunno some sort of revenge.. unless you can go to her house somehow... revenge is in everyone's heart.

I must say I love ebay too, but its always those few people that screw it up for everyone. I have a little over 100 transactions on ebay and have only had problems with 2 of them.

lost a grand total of $75 .... tried paypal buyer protection. Didn't work. They said I did deserve the money back, but since the seller did not have any money in their paypal account, nothing could be done. I did leave negative feedback! I also got their contact info from ebay. Just bug the hell outta the lady. Keep calling her ***.

All I can say is get Ebay and Paypal involved... Sometimes they help a lot!

did you use a credit card? if you used Visa you are protected up to like $500 I believe...

on my "platinum card" I can get my money back if a product is defective/broken/wrong type/I never got it... etc... gold has stuff like that too... check into it.

You could always buy a good cd player and rig the face from the stock unit over the aftermarket cd player so it tilts to unveil the working unit. just a thought may not logisticly work very well due to the shallow radio compartment.

yeah I've seen it too... the only problem is that I can't think of a single din radio that doesn't protrude from the pod area.
